Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
With reggae often heard as feel-good music, it's easy for contemporary listeners to lose sight of its original aim, which was nothing short of revolution. Whether viewed as a radical, a prophet, a human rights crusader, or simply as a music star, Bob Marley has turned out to be one of the most influential figures in recent history. Largely through him, reggae became the voice of oppressed and persecuted people everywhere. Rebel Music begins in the slums of Kingston, where Marley formed the Wailing Wailers -- a ska band -- with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston. Ultimately, this sharp-dressed, early dance-music incarnation (with the ultra-catchy tunes "Simmer Down" and "Put It On") becomes infused with political energy and Rastafarianism. The movie continues by showing the dissolution of the original group and the elevation of Marley to the spiritual leader of reggae, a place he would hold until his death from cancer in 1981, at the age of 36. Rebel Music's abundance of archival footage, reenactments, and interviews -- including Marley's wife, Rita, his bandmates the Wailers, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, music critic Roger Steffens, and even Philip Agee, a former CIA officer -- sketch some of the obstacles Marley faced: poverty, political unrest, racism, dealing with organized crime, and an assassination attempt. But Marley's words and music -- and there's plenty of both here, including rare performances of "Jammin'," "Chosen One," and the breathtaking anthem "Them Belly Full" -- eclipse all else. Even on their own, they testify to the power of one man's faith to change the world. Rebel Music will stir anyone's curiosity about Bob Marley, even those who don't count themselves fans.
