The acting is fine and well cast, however, the screenplays are not very good, especially if you have already read the books, as we have. The scripts are so incredibly different from the novel, they are unrecognizable as being based on an Ian Rankin novel. If you liked the books, then skip the movie.

    Very good, but disappointing

The episodes in this set are very good detective mysteries. The tone, the settings, the story, all follow the books well. I got really involved in the stories. BUT. Being a huge Ian Rankin fan and having read all the John Rebus novels, I found it hard to get past the casting of the Rebus and Clarke characters. They were so far from the pictures I created in my mind as I read the books, that it was distracting and left a vague disappointed feeling in the end. The Rebus character was the worst. He just didn't look, act, or sound like the Rebus the book indicated to me. Sadly, I don't believe I'll buy any of the other sets.
