When I first saw this show I didn't know what to think it was like a documentary and a political thriller wrapped up in one strange package,in fact I found the first two episodes comepletely uninteresting.I didn't even think about it for a few years until a friend convinced me to continue on with the series, and boy am I glad that she did.It works from the third episode on to its conclusion at breakneck speed. So if you get bored at first stick with it,and I promise you won't be disapointed.

A must for anyone wondering about the history of oil, how we came to rely on oil, the politics of oil, and espionage and oil, wars and oil! This has been a favorite series of mine for years. In the US, it was aired in the 1980's by WGBH PBS in Boston as a "Mystery " series, introduced by Vincent Price, who gave fascinating historic trivia concerning Reilly and the other historic figures with whom he engaged, first and second hand. Unfortunately, the DVDs do not include these intros. Often wish PBS would re-show the series! This should be required viewing in schools and colleges. The cast, costumes, settings, flow of action are excellent and compelling. Sam Neill, who we know well now, was such a splendid choice as Sidney Reilly. I'll re-watch it over and over, each time finding some nuance, or clue I missed before. Viewing with titles is interesting as well. Robin Bruce Lockhart, who was His Majesty's Consul in St.Petersburg in Russia at the time, and who is portrayed in the series, wrote the book, Reilly Ace of Spies" (Dorset Press), and a sequel, "Reilly, The First Man" (Penguin)... both great reading.

Suspenseful story, with excellent dramatic settings, and gripping acting. A very revealing tale of the turmoil beneath the formal facade of diplomatic foreign relations between powerful nations. The audio is not always good if not heard with surround sound.

Based on a rather mysterious historical figure, a very nice job was done with this series. I wish it would come out in dvd.
