Two of today's brightest young stars, Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron, light up the screen in Reindeer Games, a cat-and-mouse thriller directed with panache by the great John Frankenheimer The Manchurian Candidate. Affleck plays Rudy Duncan, a car thief who gets sprung from prison just in time for Christmas. Masquerading as his dead cellmate in order to score with the guy's gorgeous pen pal Theron, Rudy ends up getting brow beaten by the girl's thuggish brother Gary Sinise into robbing a casino. If you've seen the trailer, this is where the Santa suits come in. Frankenheimer milks the mistaken-identity situation for every conceivable drop of suspense, letting the viewer know that Rudy's life depends upon maintaining the deception. The veteran director cleverly exploits the chemistry exhibited by his hot young leads, with sparks flying between Affleck and Theron during a surprisingly steamy love scene. Meanwhile, highly improbable events are made believable by a talented supporting cast led by Sinise. And Frankenheimer really heightens the tension with supercharged action sequences, making Reindeer Games an exhilarating two-hour thrill ride.
