The director of Mortal Kombat (1995) adapts another popular video game for the big screen with this gory action thriller. Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez star as Alice and Rain, two members of a commando team assigned to infiltrate the Hive, an underground research laboratory owned by the faceless conglomerate known as the Umbrella Corporation. A bio-engineered virus has been released into the maze-like Hive, turning the facility's employees into mindless, flesh-eating zombies. A single scratch or bite from one of these rampaging ghouls dooms its victim, so the commandos have their work cut out for them as they attempt to reach the Red Queen, the lab's supercomputer -- and their sole hope of halting the spread of the contagion. Before they can complete their mission, however, the soldiers must overcome a variety of deadly obstacles, including mutant dogs, lasers, and a genetically altered beast known as The Licker, whose strength increases with every victim it slays. Alice and Rain also discover that the release of the virus may not have been an accident, and that a cure may exist somewhere in the deadly Hive. Resident Evil co-stars Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
Big scares, bigger action, and state-of-the-art visual effects help bring Resident Evil from the game console to the big screen in this frenetic and somewhat faithful adaptation. The story is set in a high-tech security compound, where dubious research has produced a virus that causes its dead hosts to walk and eat flesh. With the area under lockdown, a select group of soldiers and employees (including Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, and Eric Mabius) must eliminate the problem -- that is, before the problem eats them. As an amnesiac operative unsure of her motivations, Jovovich revisits the Fifth Element persona with predictably sexy results. Rodriguez, as a scrappy soldier, brings new force to her trademark scowl. Their most memorable costars, which include a legion of ravenous undead and the mutant Licker, are the result of great special effects, both of the makeup and digital varieties. In his second video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat director Paul Anderson bares his scaremonger chops, balancing the gory action with tense, white-knuckle setups and old-fashioned seat-jumping fright. The DVD features audio commentary with the cast and filmmakers, various making-of featurettes, and more.

Resident Evil 4.1 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 47 reviews.

This is a thriller, sudden shock, creepy scenes, and some pretty interesting stuff, (you'll know what i'm talking about after you witness the ''laser'' scene. If you have never heard of Resident Evil, you will still enjoy this, to me it's like a crazy horror film mixed with Swordfish. But if your a Resident Evil fan, BUY THIS NOW! It has some key trats you'll compare with the series, (eg. look at the name of the train), but also other things that will have you dropping your jaw, (but I don't want to give the coolest parts awat). So either way, pick this up, it rocks. The DVD has features which make it even better than just the excellent movie.

Movie was an excellent one and had every detail perfectly fit with the storyline. Will watch over and over. Resident Evil fans, your perfect movie has arrived!

In my book, there are three types of movies. Bad commercial garbage, good commercial garbage and art/oscar contenders. Resident Evil is good commercial garbage. It's fast paced, full of suspense and stylish. As for the story, Resident Evil is Night of the Living Dead for the year 2002.

I think Resident Evil is the best movie i have ever seen so far and i like it for the horror and graphics.

Resident Evil is the most sexiest, scariest and the dropdead ''Oh my god I think I'm gonna barf!'' coolest movie yet!!! I'm haapy and a little frighten at the fact Resident Evil has now been turned from a video game to a live movie!! Thanks a million!!!

The Resident Evil movie was in my opinion excellent for one exception, the licker. Unfortunatly the licker looked as digital in the film as it did in the game. However this didn't ruin the film, the zombies looked good (if you know what I mean) and the scene in the laser room was very cool. Looking forward to the sequel.

I have seen movies that were based of video games but resident evil has to be the best yet. I own it on DVD and the special features are great. Hopefuly they make Resident Evil 2 soon cause i wanna see what is going to happen to that guy that got his arm slpit open by the licker near the end of the movie. well i know what is going to happen to him if they make a sequal to the the movie. The graphics where awsome in this movie and if the get the same guy for the sequal that did the graphics for the first one the sequal will be just as good.

The movie was tired five minutes into it. Although I did not expect much from this movie, I expected at least a little preparation. It seemed like the script was written as they were filming. If you can keep up a steady jog, you have nothing to fear from the lackluster zombies. There are some references to the video game that avid players may enjoy.

This movie after watching is one of the best of its kind. It incorprates technology w/ out going too far like most movies do. If you have played the game(s) the movie plays perfectly into them. This movie after watching will also make anybody watch it over and over!

I really enjoyed this film. Sure it's a little slow but it gets better. There is some pretty good make up effects as well. This movie is good and if you are a Resident Evil fan, you'll enjoy this movie. Remember it's not perfect, but it's fun to watch.

Rule number one when watching a movie that is based off of a Video Game is this: NEVER compare the video game to the movie. A movie is a movie, and a game is a game. You never hear anyone comparing video games based off of movies to the movies do you? (ie: James Bond & Harry Potter games). Resident Evil, as a movie, is excellent, with chilling moments, gripping situations and a very good storyline. The actors all did well in their respective roles and I especially enjoyed Milla! They slowly allowed you to understand the why's and who's of the plot as the story developed, without giving away too much in the beginning. The sets and special effects were all up to par and well done. It is ''The Night Of The Living Dead'' of the new generation...and deserves it rightful place in the genre. The ending was great, and I look forward to a sequel. Why only 4 stars then you ask? Well, as with most action or horror movies today, there is a certain level of unbelievability which you can never attain to. I reserve my 5 stars for the likes of critical acclaim, which obviously, Resident Evil will never get. RENT OR BUY THIS ONE TODAY...It is one of the best of its kind!

Resident Evil the movie is no doubt a tribute to the game series. It closely follows the game's story and even added a few twists for the veteran gamer. Zombies in this film have a new edge that old films do not give them, and since they threw in a good old Licker it makes it the most interesting film-of-a-game to date. I was surprised that they missed out a few vital elements that make Resident Evil what it is, which cost them a star. Overall- 'Watch it!'

The action related to the games is the best. The story line meets perfectly with the main sorty line of the games and books. Definetly a must buy if you are a Resident Evil fan!

this movie is the best yet. It has really good speacial efects like when they walk in the laser room and the lasers cut them in half. Also the zombies look as if they are real. ALso there is a sequil called Resident evil nemisis

The best thing about Resident Evil is that it combines a great plot, jokes, scientific mumbo-jumbo, and action. Not only does it have these things, but it also combines them well. Also, the jokes come at just the right time, and though the effects aren't too good, the sets and transition from scene to scene is.

This movie is terrible. I thought George A. Romero was supposed to direct this! Why was he off the project? Paul Anderson is a hack! He should have stuck to Mortal freakin Kombat. The actual video games are creepier! In fact, I stopped this movie and played Resident Evil Zero. And I had a great time.

Resident evil is an excellent movie which me and some other mates watched with me.One person hated it and said the zombies didn't look real! You can't get much more real than that.Great film.

I gave it two stars for effects, but if you don't know the storyline, you have no idea about what's going on for the first 40 minutes of the movie. A lot of sequences were slow and not descript. If you don't know the game, DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE.

Resident Evil is one of my favorite films because the storyline is great, the special effects are excellent, and the cast was phenomenal. I really loved the whole Special Ops thing. I first saw the movie 5 days ago, and I am still mad because Rain died. I don't think the sequel will be half as good without her somewhat thugish presence. Overall the movie was good, but I am VERY disguested.

Well I really liked the movie...but I didn't give this movie the last 2 stars for 2 reasons....1:I feel, along with many others, that this movie didn't do a very good job with following the guidelines of the resident evil games or books...and 2: I think they should have thrown a few more of Umbrella's twisted, mutated, experiments at the team....hopefully the next movie will be alot more satisfying....

When I saw this title on the shelf of the video rental store, i thought it's about time to check it out. But first, I check the back of the video case to see reviews and etc. I read the info about the movie's plot and cast. One line said 'eye-poping special effects'. So I'm thinking, this will be pretty good. The results were disapointing. And I thought The Mummy Returs had the worst special effects. The special effects looked more like claymation. Try watching Chicken Run with Downsyndrome and get drunk. The story is different from the game, along with the characters. But this does not bother me. It's the special effects and a little bit of the storyline. Now, it's time to review House of the Dead and possibly get disapointed
