Overview

In this sequel to 1985's Return of the Living Dead, a bunch of horny teens discover that their new designer drug is actually a chemical that turns humans into flesh-eating zombies. Unfortunately, they don't make this discovery until they're in the middle of an enormous outdoor dance party, where the wild costumes and chemically induced shenanigans make it difficult to tell who's a zombie and who's simply having a good time. Although it shares plot points, characters, actors, and crew with Return of the Living Dead 4: Necropolis, Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave to the Grave features only a cameo from Peter Coyote, the sole bold-faced name from the previous film. Both movies were co-written by William Butler, who previously acted in 1990's Night of the Living Dead remake, among other horror films.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
Return of the Living Dead and its first sequel were enjoyably goofy attempts to graft punk trappings onto the basic George A. Romero zombie concept. The teen fashions may have been as secondhand as the horror setup, but the low-budget execution was right-on. After the darker Return of the Living Dead III and the just-plain-awful Return of the Living Dead 4: Necropolis, this fifth installment returns the series to its original zombies-and-subcultures scenario. The rave scene replaces the punk milieu, but in other respects Rave to the Grave stays true to the franchise's roots. The script, by returning scribes William Butler and Aaron Strongoni, is almost as dull as that of the previous outing. But the whole ecstasy-users-equals-zombies concept is worth a chuckle or two, and the climactic dance party provides plenty of opportunities for colorful gore and pop-cultural riffing. Tobe Hooper's name was once thrown around as a possible director for both this installment and Necropolis -- a fact that underscores Ellory Elkayem's shortcomings as a director. But Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave to the Grave is a perfectly adequate time-filler for both the SciFi Channel's schedule and horror fans' Saturday afternoons.
