Return of the Living Dead Part II

Overview

The goofy zombie sequel Return of the Living Dead Part II makes its way to DVD for the first time with this slick but flawed release from Warner Home Video. Presented in its original 1.85:1 widescreen image, the picture looks remarkably clear, with colors enhanced from previous VHS and laserdisc copies.

Included is a commentary from writer/director Ken Wiederhorn and none other than Part II's zombie kid himself, Thor Van Lingen. Recorded separately, the two have fun with the film, with Thor easily guiding the viewer through the film like it was the back of his hand. He's also the one that admits to what will obviously be the biggest beef with this DVD -- its newly created Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack. Much of the film's original synth score has been replaced with either new ambient creepy music or '80s-style party music. It's possible that there could have been some song rights issues, but you can toggle over to the French audio track easy enough to hear the old score in all its glory. Other added sound effects and even a voice-over will also be a distraction for fans of the original version, though first-time viewers won't be affected too much by it. The theatrical trailer rounds out the extras on this disc.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
With higher production values and lower box-office returns than its predecessor, this teen horror flick follows familiar financial patterns. Artistically, though, it's no better or worse than the first Return of the Living Dead. Casual horror fans would probably enjoy whichever film they saw first, while genre obsessives would find enough variety in plot and special effects to sit happily through both installments. Gags this time include a clever jab at MTV, knowing nods to Tobe Hooper's Salem's Lot and George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, and plenty more horrificomic dialogue from the gruesome zombie legions. Anyone who thinks self-referential horror-comedy began with the '90s Scream franchise should take a peek at this underrated series.

    A disapointment

this movie was a waste of money. it was supposed to be a 'horror-comedy' however i didn't find it to be either. there was absolutely no suspense past chapter 5, it had no plot, it left a lot of things unresolved, the acting here was awful. not to mention they had two of the actors from the first movie in this one in different roles, but i swear its like they just weren't even trying. the zombie scenes were the lousiest parts. definitely a waste of money, not even worth renting. the first and third movie were so awesome, definitely check those out but avoid this one.
