Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Amy Robinson
Actress Bonnie Hunt, whose resume includes work in such films such as Jerry Maguire and The Green Mile as well as two critically acclaimed but short-lived TV series, makes her directorial debut with this romantic comedy about the joys of family and the heartaches of organ donations. David Duchovny stars as a grieving widower who finds love with a kindly waitress played by Minnie Driver and her eccentric extended family. All the while he has no idea she was the recipient of his dead wife's heart. While Duchovny exudes a low-key comedic charm and Driver a quirky vulnerability, Return to Me really shines in its ensemble work. The true highlights here are Hunt's own subplot as the wife of blustery but gentle Jim Belushi and the long-awaited return of Carroll O'Connor to the big screen. Well observed, consistently amusing, and often touching, Return to Me is a love letter to its characters and to the city of Chicago.
All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
The directorial debut of respected actress Bonnie Hunt, Return to Me is a polished and skillfully realized romantic comedy that literally reverses the tearjerker formula by placing its tragic death at the film's beginning rather than the conclusion. Instead of a tale of doomed romance, Hunt has created (with her writing partner Don Lake, who also appears in a humorous cameo), a story that's not exactly the high-concept Hollywood standard: the journey of two people slowly and intelligently putting their lives back together. The director, who cast the film with many of her personal friends from the acting community, pulls fully engaged, grounded performances from her film's protagonists, David Duchovny and Minnie Driver. Driver has earned her chops in this genre with hits such as Circle of Friends (1995) and Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), but Duchovny, noted for his trademark icy reserve, is a revelation as a man with a deeply painful emotional life. An underrated gem that deserved more attention from critics and audiences, Return to Me marks the freshman project of a filmmaker with a promising future behind the camera.

You'll return to "Return To Me" over and over!

"What an unlikely pair" was my first thought when I saw David Duchovny and Minnie Driver in the preview to this Bonnie Hunt directed romantic comedy. But after watching this wonderful film, I just couldn't see anyone else doing these roles. Bonnie Hunt has put together a brilliant cast in an accomplished film that warms your heart and lifts your soul. Duchovny plays the part of Bob Rueland, an architect who is happily married to Elizabeth (played by Joely Richardson), a dedicated zoologist who is killed in a car accident. While he goes through the grief of losing his wife in death, another woman, Grace Briggs (played by Minnie Driver), is given new hope for life as she is given a heart in a transplant. It is Elizabeth's heart however that Grace receives that saves her life. After about a year, Bob begins to finally piece his life back together and meets Grace at an Italian/Irish restaurant that her grandfather owns where she works as a server. There is an immediate attraction between the two, and they begin to fall in love, neither aware that it is Elizabeth's heart that she carries. Bonnie Hunt crafts a delicate subject into a humorous, heart-warming and sometimes tearful story of courage and love. The supporting cast were all wonderful and believable, and the chemistry between Duchovny and Driver was perfect. This is without a doubt one of the best romantic comedys I have ever seen, and I have watched it numerous times, and I am sure I will watch it numerous times again. I highly recommend "Return To Me" to anyone!

This story was especially poignant to me since I had a heart transplant almost ten years ago.

I Didn't Think I Would Like This Movie...

(by Larry D. Bohall, author of Marytr's Cry: The Mystery for Hopeless Romantics): Boy, was I surprised! I not only liked this movie, I LOVED it! Oh, sure...it stretches believability quite a bit, but so what? It's done with class, finesse, and an amazing touch of sweetness. Bonnie Hunt is wonderful, and she did an incredible job making this movie...I hope she makes many, many more. I was especially moved by David Duchovny's scene with the dog (much more effective than the ones with the gorilla).

One of the most romantic movies ever made!

I'm not much of a fan of David Duchovney or Minne Driver, but the story line was interesting. As soon as the credits rolled, I wanted to watch the movie again. I laughed and cried at this touching, and unique storyline. David and Minnie are the perfect couple. David's facial expressions and ability to play the romantic lead are priceless. There are hillarious moments, as well as touching ones. The music in the movie is also wonderful, and really complements the entire storyline. If you buy the DVD, check out the commentary by Bonnie Hunt. It's great, because she doesn't talk over the whole movie, like on some DVD's. You can actually hear the movie-and it's like she is watching the movie along with you, only adding comments that she thinks are relative to the story.

    Character actors make this movie!

When you've had a bad day and just want to go home and be pleasantly entertained, this movie fills the bill! Carroll O'Connor, Robert Logia, Bonnie Hunt and Jim Belushi are wonderful in supporting roles. The love story is sweet, if not to be believed, but then what is? Very nice soundtrack, too.

As soon as Return To Me was released on video I rushed out to but it. I've seen it 40 times at least. I still cry, laugh, get goose bumps and cannot wait to see it again. It is a beautful romantic comedy that deserves rave reviews. People of all ages will enjoy it. Its is, so far, my favorite movie of all time.

A Terrific Chick Flick....Even for Guys

This is Bonnie Hunt's first movie as a director. She's done a great job, as did the writers and the cast. It's a sweet, sweet movie with a story-line that isn't formula. You'll love Carroll O'Connor and Jim Belushi as much as you do David Duchovny and Minne Driver.

I've watched this with friends, family, co-workers, and mere acquaintances... it never fails as a true crowd pleaser. The male roles are thoroughly real and the women are as strong and intelligent as your best friend.

Fall in love all over again!

Viewers will fall in love with this movie! David Duchovny (Bob Rueland) strays from his traditional x-files role to capture the hearts of viewers in this romantic comedy with costar Minnie Driver. These two are great together! A unique and surprising mixture of romance, humor, and real life events. I've watched this movie three times and never get tired of it. It always seems to lift my spirits every time I watch it and really help me to appreciate life and live it to the fullest!

A romantic movie even dad liked!

I saw this movie opening weekend with my parents and even my dad was happy at the end. Bonnie Hunt has written/directed a movie that really appeals to the whole family. She took an idea that was tricky to work with and created a phenomenal film. The cast is wonderful! This is really the best movie I saw all year. I recommend this movie to everyone and no one has been disappointed.

    A Wonderful Film!

I so enjoyed this movie. It was totally absorbing and entertaining. I want Bonnie Hunt to know what a great film she has made. I was soooo disappointed there wasn't a bigger box office for her. I told everyone I knew they needed to get out to see it. Sadly it left too soon. Now I will own it and have friends over to enjoy it.
