Overview

In the summer of 2004, Polly Parsons, the daughter of country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons, organized a massive tribute concert to honor her late father's musical legacy (and to benefit Musicians Assistance Program, an organization dedicated to providing drug and alcohol treatment programs for working musicians), and this DVD release captures the sights and sounds of a very special evening at Hollywood's Universal Amphitheater. Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1, which has also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The digitally shot images are crisp and richly colorful throughout with an admirable depth of detail. The audio has been mastered in three formats: Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Stereo, and DTS 5.1. The sound mix ably balances dynamics with punch and honors the many different musical styles on display. The songs are performed in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options. The disc's only significant bonus is a commentary track from Polly Parsons and her good friend (and fellow concert organizer) Shilah Morrow, who offer an entertaining if somewhat scattershot perspective on how the show was put together (and nearly collapsed more than once).
