Otherwise, this picture displays warm colors and dark black levels. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English and is appropriate for the film it supports. Since this is primarily a dialogue-driven comedy-drama, the directional effects are confined mainly to the front and center speakers with only a handful of effects leaking out of the rear channels. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English, Chinese, French, Korean, and Thai, as well as a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack in French. Extra features consist of: a humorous commentary track by star Drew Barrymore (who is both bubbly and professional); an HBO making-of featurette that is only mildly interesting; four featurettes ("Drew's Trailer Tour," "Bev and Ray's House: Re-creating Reality," "The Cars," and "Beverly and Jason: Sons and Lovers") which add up to a grand total of around 13 minutes; a few theatrical trailers; and some cast and crew filmographies.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Drew Barrymore demonstrates her versatility and continued willingness to take artistic chances by playing a working-class mom, warts and all, in this generally lighthearted but occasionally moving drama. Barrymore sparkles as Beverly Donofrio, the real-life scribe whose memoirs were slightly laundered for film adaptation. An ebullient but wayward teen, Beverly is impregnated by a well-meaning dullard Steve Zahn and raises her child, with a little help from her parents Lorraine Bracco and James Woods, when her underemployed spouse becomes addled by liquor and drugs. Beverly, who has always dreamed of being a writer, continually tries to enter college, but unexpected maternal emergencies always intrude on her quest for self-improvement. If Beverly sounds like one of Hollywood’s typically noble mothers, she's not: This young woman likes to complain that the fates have conspired to ruin her life, and she’s reluctant to admit that her circumstances were at least partially determined by the bad choices she made. This whiney trait casts her in an unflattering light -- but it also makes her a more believable character. Penny Marshall A League of Their Own directs with an awareness of the countless little indignities endured by parents with limited means. Refreshingly disdainful of formulaic narrative contrivances, Riding in Cars with Boys feels a lot closer to the truth and, therefore, a lot more compelling. Barrymore supplies a commentary for the DVD, which also sports four behind-the-scenes featurettes, an HBO making-of documentary, trailers, and production notes.

For all its characters' weaknesses, it believes in their essential decency and capacity for love -- and for a good deal of the time it makes us believers, too. Stephen Holden

A film like this is refreshing and startling in the way it cuts loose from formula and shows us confused lives we recognize.

    A reviewer

this was an okay but sweet and sad film. we have an early mom and how she wishes she could change some of the mistakes but can't and must accept it. cool that sara gilbert and brittany murhpy's in it, who was just funny as her best friend especially when they were teens. steve zahn was interesting and also funny. had no idea peter facinelli was in it and he was just cute. drew barrymore did a good job with her role. check this film once in a while.

    Barrymore Fan

As a fan of most of Drew Barrymore's movies I truly enjoyed watching this. It provides an insight to what pregnant teenagers go through not to mention showing exactly why teenage pregnancy is bad both for mother, father, and child.

    IT WAS FANTASTIC!

I really enjoyed the movie that is why i am doing the book for a book report! BUt i cant find any info. on Donofrio but oh Well! But Drew did an awsome performence her son was adorable and its a film teenage girls can relate to even if they arent pregnant. The only thing is that they changed some things from the real book!

    One of Drew's Best!

This is certainly one of Drew Barrymore's best. But my first and foremost favorite movie of hers is the Wedding Singer. Riding in Cars, is a great story, that will keep you in stitches and in tears through out the movie!

    Its good.

I loved the movie but couldn't they have had somebody other than Drew Barrymore as the star? I don't like her. Her son is so funny as a kid!
