Rob RoyDirector: Michael Caton-Jones, Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, John Hurt
The 18th century Scottish legend of Robert Roy MacGregor comes to life in this stylish adaptation of the swashbuckling novel by Sir Walter Scott. Liam Neeson stars as the title character, a cattle drover and proud head of a Highlands clan who takes a one thousand pound loan from the royal Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) in order to make a profit on some livestock that will keep his struggling people alive through the coming winter. One of the Marquis' henchmen, wily expert swordsman Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth) learns of the loan from the nobleman's factor, Killearn (Brian Cox), and steals the money by murdering Rob Roy's best friend MacDonald (Eric Stoltz). Unable to repay the loan and unwilling to give up his land, Rob Roy becomes a fugitive, hunted by none other than Cunningham, who rapes Rob Roy's wife Mary (Jessica Lange). Scotch-British politics come to a boil over the Rob Roy affair, leading to an officially sanctioned showdown between the stoic farmer and Cunningham.

I love this period movie and continue to rewatch it even though it was released back in 1997. The action and adventure in it are great for those of us who enjoy the history of this time period. Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange had wonderful performances and portrayed their characters in a manner that makes you want more when the movie ends. You will not be disappointed if you give this movie a go!!!
This is a grand movie, but may I point out to the previous reviewer that Rob Roy was a SCOTSMAN, meaning that he was from SCOTLAND and, therefore, showing SCOTTISH pride?????
This movie is absolutely amazing, inspiring and great fun to watch! I loved because it kept me on the edge of my seat, and totally engrossed me in it! All the Actors and Actresses in it were spectacular! It showed how the Scottish Spirit survived to this day! It also showed how no matter the hardships inposed on him, Robert Roy MacGregor never forget that he was proud Scottish highlander, or the convictions and honor that he held as dear as his family! Not to mention Liam Neeson is good looking, and a great actor, he became that person! It was fun, yet dramamtic and sometimes funny and heartfelt! Great to watch!
Excellent period piece caputuring fuedal polictics and social standards and the consequences of there downfallings. The script is wonderfully adapted from the novel to present a movie that is not considered a "period piece" rather a true drama appealable to most all movie lovers.
Rob Roy was indeed a Scotsman and is played wonderfully by Liam Neeson, who is actually an Irishman. This is a beautiful film and the sound track is marvelous! It's one of my all time favorite tales.
This movie is, in short, truly amazing. The talk of honor throughout the story makes you want to be an Irishmen yourself. Liam Neeson give yet another brilliant performance as Robert Roy MacGregor, an Irishmen whom places honor above everything else. Even through the trials and hardships brought upon him, he still stands strong with an aire of Irish pride. Great Movie, Highly Recommended.
