Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Briskly paced and brimming with visual delights, these claymation comedies are a wonderful gift from England's BBC, writer Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and directors Richard Goleszowski and Peter Peake (Wallace & Gromit).
Hooves of Fire introduces Robbie (voiced by Ben Stiller), the son of a certain red-nosed reindeer, who arrives in the North Pole in need of "character-building." Hugh Grant is Blitzen, still seething over Rudolph's celebrity and eager to sabotage Robbie's to quest for a spot on Santa's sleigh team. A surprising Britney Spears is Donner, who inspires Robbie to enter the Reindeer Games. In Legend of the Lost Tribe, Robbie enlists help from a mythical tribe of Vikings to foil Blitzen's plot to open a mercenary amusement park, Reindeer World. Other familiar voices on the American side: Emmy winner Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) as Prancer; Jerry Stiller as Old Jingle, Robbie's wise and weird coach; Leah Remini (The King of Queens) as the aptly named Vixen; and Jim Belushi as Santa. The writing is wonderfully witty, as when Blitzen greets Robbie with, "If you have any problems, come and see me. If you don't have any problems, come and see me anyway and we'll celebrate your lack of problems." Robbie the Reindeer may not have anything to do with Christmas per se, but this will surely brighten the holidays and beyond. A nice DVD feature: A menu choice allows you to hear the programs with their original British vocal tracks.
