Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Greg Kalleres
Shooting its way into theaters in 1987, RoboCop garnered a large following as an action-packed, satirical, and, yes, ultraviolent film about the bleak future of law enforcement in Detroit. A good, honest cop named Murphy Peter Weller, brutally murdered in the line of duty, finds his body reconstructed into a cybernetic crime-fighting weapon by the evil corporation that runs the police department. But Murphy proves he has ideas of his own, as he seeks revenge on the malicious thugs who savagely killed him. Strewn with high-intensity action and eye-popping stop-motion animation, director Paul Verhoeven Total Recall intelligently balances the film with a strong emotional element, as Murphy searches not only for revenge but for his identity. The film is at its best when crossing the story's inherent drama with satirical and often self-reflexive humor. Followed by two sequels, a forgettable TV series, and numerous comic books and novels, RoboCop has earned its place among the premier science-fiction films of the '80s.
All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
Dutch director Paul Verhoeven's bloody, glossy B-movie sensibilities first reached a mass audience with this science-fiction vigilante fantasy. The idea of a crime-ridden Detroit of the near future mostly shot in Dallas, combined with an indestructible android Peter Weller and a slew of tech-noir trappings appealed to '80s audiences weaned on Blade Runner, Ronald Reagan, and the idea of American society backsliding into amoral corporate ruin. The casting is sublime: Weller's creepy, Aryan good looks are a perfect match for the role, and he and love interest Nancy Allen seem aware of the script's more preposterous moments. RoboCop's attempts at social commentary and satirical jabs at corporate authority are, like much of the rest of the film, juvenile but effective. Above all else, the film established Verhoeven as a slick, dark director with an uncanny knack for making ludicrous material compelling.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
Most thriller and special-effects movies come right off the assembly line. You can call out every development in advance, and usually be right. RoboCop is a thriller with a difference.

    don't be fooled...

Yes, on the surface, it may seem like just another sci-fi/action movie. But this is one thats a lot smarter than it seems at first glance. exploring themes of humanity, violence, media, and corporate greed, its just as relevent now (if not more so) than it was at the time it was made.

    Highly Recommended. The true original!

Finally, a great HD version with supplements that rivals the SD Criterion disc.

    I Also Recommend:

    A Great Sci-Fi/Action Film!

This movie is great! It's among my favorite in sci-fi/action, and among some of my first choices of old skool favorites to upgrade to blue ray...among the ranks of others such as Terminator 2, Independance Day, Men in Black, and several others. This movie was pretty well restored on blue ray and certainly looks better than the DVD did...and I still only have a regular TV, so that's saying something. The sound is much improved too. Not only is this movie a great sci fi concept, containing some decent acting and great action, but it's also deeper than that. It explores themes of humanity, media, and corporate greed within society, even a dystopic society...and as lunchboxmonkey said before me, and I agree...the ideas expanded upon within the movie are even more prevelant in this day and age...and this movie was made back in 1987. The acting wasn't half bad either. I like Peter Weller, and especially Kurtwood Smith...who played the role of nemesis Clarence Boddicker quite well I thought. Kurtwood has been in some great movies, and who couldn't love him as Red Foreman in That 70s Show? LoL! Gotta love it! If you are a sci-fi/action buff and have never seen this, you are missing out! Sure, its pretty old skool, as far as special effects & whatnot are concerned, but it's a great movie! Don't listen to any of those haters! Check this out! If you have already seen this before and are a fan, and are like me & planning to upgrade to high def, I don't think I need to tell you that this is a must own on blue ray! Get on it! >:-)

    Worst Movie Ever Made

By far this has to be the worst film of all-time. The plot is so stupid and not to mention the horrible acting. After seeing this film many years ago, I felt like an idiot because I actually put myself through that horrible experience. Please do not waste any time of your life by watching this movie. I'd rather watch the Barbie DVD Collection.
