Although he's supported by his girlfriend Emily Jennifer Aniston, Chris is devastated when his friends kick him out of the band he founded. His humiliation doesn't last long, however, as Chris soon learns that he's been tapped to replace the lead singer of Steel Dragon, literally becoming a rock star overnight. Chris soon has everything he's ever wanted but is disappointed to discover that being a superstar isn't everything it's cracked up to be. Rock Star was produced under two other titles, "Metal God" and "So You Want to Be a Rock Star."

High-spirited and boisterous, this paean to heavy metal and its adherents has a sober and dramatic side, which director Stephen Herek Mr. Holland's Opus presents with insight and verisimilitude. Top-billed Mark Wahlberg, portraying a penniless tribute-band vocalist who becomes the lead singer of the British rock group he worships, brings to his character the same wide-eyed naiveté he exhibited as the blooming porn star of Boogie Nights. Gifted, ambitious, and sweet, Wahlberg's Chris Cole achieves astonishing success, succumbs to almost irresistible temptations, and nearly self-destructs in the process. Jennifer Aniston lends admirable support in the carefully developed role of Wahlberg's loyal girlfriend, who watches helplessly as the group's enormous success and outlandish lifestyle gradually overwhelm their relationship. British actor Timothy Spall is particularly good as the band's worldly-wise road manager, whose slovenly exterior affords no clue that he's a perceptive realist who's seen it all before. Director Herek captures rock stardom's decadent pleasures -- sex, drugs, ego massage, and even outright worship -- and brings the viewer smack-dab into the middle of this grandiose and ridiculous world. Rock Star occasionally falls back on rags-to-riches clichés, but Herek's outstanding helmsmanship, Wahlberg's carefully calibrated performance, and a dynamic soundtrack make it one of the year's most satisfying popcorn movies. Herek and writer John Stockwell supply a full-length commentary for the DVD, which also includes a making-of featurette, outtakes, and music videos.

As VH1's Behind the Music upgraded the status of hair bands like Def Leppard and Bon Jovi from public embarrassment to source of nostalgia, the appetite grew for a movie like Rock Star. Director Stephen Herek doesn't disappoint in this first mainstream attempt to cast pop metal as a modern period piece, using equal parts Almost Famous, A Star Is Born, and This Is Spinal Tap for a likable, if superficial brew. Herek proves himself as much a fan of rock bravura as a critic of its shallowness, perfectly capturing trademark elements like the overblown sets and the interchangeable lead singers. Mark Wahlberg, playing another naif run through the glamorous wringer in a decade-defining epic (see Boogie Nights), has the natural swagger to pull off the role effortlessly -- even if his own musical roots were in popular hip-hop, a fact teased during the closing credits. Jennifer Aniston is a little too self-aware to seem like a real rock chick, but she displays far greater subtlety than one would expect from a television actress, elevating the role above obviousness. Most of the supporting performances, including a superlative Timothy Spall, also reflect enough nuance to avoid cliché. The film offers all the formulaic moments one would expect, but that doesn't make it any less fun to see hotel furniture glued to the ceiling and other apocryphal moments yanked from rock biographies. The fact that Steel Dragons is comprised of real musicians from that era, composing and performing new and utterly believable anthems, adds to the authenticity. The end shift to Seattle even previews the 1990s in a way that's simultaneously earnest and tongue-in-cheek -- very much like these metal gods themselves.

    Amazing and surprising

    Last saturday night I wasn't so keen about watching TV. It just ran for a background sound and I was expecting absolutely nothing. Bored to hell, what to do? Till the movie started. It was crazy!!!!!!!!!!! This music, it was one of the best movies I've seen lately. Even if it was predictible and so superficial, the music was absolutely worth it. At once I was back in the 80s,it reminded me of so much I was living myself. Not as that good/bad, as in the movie, but enough for recognizing. I was LIVING the story, singing the songs and so mad about myself to not have started recording this. Everybody who lived the 80s live, needs this movie and the music. Too bad, Steel Dragon is not a real group........... Truly heaven was the passage with Ted Nugent's Stranglehold. At the first moment I was startled. Was that really? Oh yeah, it was!!!!!!!!!! That song was one of my favorites in the 80s. Living the past, this moving is really living the 80s through the music.

    Great Movie and Music

    I thought that this movie was awesome. I watched it 5 times when I rented it. Mark Wahlberg was sensational in the movie and the story was a great as well. I recommend this movie to just about eveyone. I also would recommend the soundtrack, the music was very very good!!

    one of a kind

    Ok I can say that this is the 2nd film I'm watching related to metal (the other one was little nickie) but as a movies guy my comment is that THIS ONE ROCKED MY WORLDS. It is one of the 2 best films I enjoyed the most, excellent scenario, no stupid american endings, awsome music and a complete reflection of the original metalhead, something that it is too rare in my country. If you are into hardrock and heavy metal then this is not something to miss.

    Steelheart Frontman gets his props

    Good over-all flick. The ending is a bit much (Total Eddie Vedder grunge transformation). Otherwise, it's good to see former Steelheart and RED ALERT (CT) frontman Mike M. still rocks, doing some of the vocals for Markie-Mark

    A Gotta See!

    Mark Wahlberg was excellent in this film! I watched it over and over for a week I liked it so much! You have to see this if you are a die hard rock fan like myself!

    STAND UP AND SHOUT!!!!

    When I first heard Mark ''Marky Mark'' Wahlberg was going to play a rocker in a heavy metal band..I doubled over with laughter. How could this failure of a rapper play a metal head? Well after watching this film...I was speechless. He was brilliant in the role. The film is kind of funny at times, and I am not really sure it was supposed to be. If you grew up with bands like Iron Maiden,Judas Priest,Man o war...Then you will love the flashback this movie provides. Incidentally...rumor has it that this film is actually based on Judas Priest..which adds even more twisted humor! I definetly recommend this film. Its ''awesome dude''. Enjoy!
