Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Weary of playing dimwitted thugs, realtively anonymous character actor Sylvester Stallone wrote himself a starring vehicle in 1976, got it produced on a shoestring budget and, much like the character he crafted, found himself quite unexpectedly atop the world. The Rocky series, five films shot over a 14-year span, is a contemporary saga of nearly Homeric proportions, chronicling both the triumphs and the tragedies of its warm-hearted, indomitable protagonist. The first film introduces Stallone as Rocky Balboa, a two-bit Philadelphia boxer who longs for a title shot and trains relentlessly while working as a collector for loan sharks -- and wooing the local girl, Adrian (Talia Shire). Burgess Meredith shines as Paulie, Rocky's grizzled trainer, and former football player Carl Weathers rounds out the cast as cocky champ Apollo Creed. Director John G. Avildsen (The Karate Kid) handles clichéd characters and situations adroitly, crafting them into the archetypal underdog film of our time; it's easy to see, 25 years later, why both he and the film won Oscars. The 1979 follow-up, the best of the sequels, reunites the major cast members and pits an uncertain Rocky -- grappling with sudden success -- against Apollo once again. Rocky III (1982) finds the champ matched against tough-talking Mr. T while coping with the demands of fatherhood. Rocky IV (1985) finds Rocky standing tall for America in the midst of the Cold War, heading to Moscow to vanquish the brutal Russian fighting machine (Dolph Lundgren) who has beaten Apollo to death in an exhibition fight. The series' final entry, Rocky V (1990), shows a deeply troubled, brain-damaged champ, financially strapped by bad investments and estranged from his adolescent son, returning to the ring for one last, potentially fatal bout. The sequels never enjoyed the first film's critical success, but they continue to delight viewers who love to root for the underdog. The handsomely packaged Anthology collects all five Rocky movies and includes a special edition of the Oscar-winning first film, which features commentaries by Stallone, Avildsen, and other cast members, as well as other bonus material.

These movies were excellent stories of how determination could help anyone, even an individual with a life filled with poverty, to succeed in their life. The Rocky movies will live on forever and give everyone , especially those who need it most, "the eye of the tiger."
