Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Cold War-era aerial ace Rocket J. Squirrel and his pal, Bullwinkle J. Moose, embark on some of their silliest heroics yet in this third-season set. The highlight of the set is "Missouri Mish Mash," featuring the legendary Kurwood Derby (named after veteran TV second banana Durwood Kirby), which transforms the wearer into the smartest person in the world. "Lazy Jay Ranch" and "Topsy Turvy World" are also wonderfully absurd, chock-full of terrible puns and keen satire that skewers such sacred institutions as the government and television itself ("Our ratings have been slipping," Bullwinkle ponders when faced with the beginning of a new adventure). Each of the lightning-paced shows features segments that have garnered their own cult of fans, including "Fractured Fairy Tales," "Peabody’s Improbable History," and Dudley-Do-Right of the Mounties. The installment "Coming Out Party," in Show 20, is one of Dudley’s best, in which the stalwart Mountie tries on Snidely Whiplash’s top hat and cape and becomes an arch-villain. And now, to paraphrase Bullwinkle’s Mr. Know-It-All, for the educational portion of this review: This four-disc set pulls at least one archival goodie out of its hat, a montage of clips from the 1961 Bullwinkle Show, featuring introductions by a Bullwinkle puppet (voiced by series co-creator Bill Scott). Soon abandoned by a skittish network, they were characteristically irreverent, and no doubt baffling to young viewers ("Welcome to The Loretta Young Show," Bullwinkle announces in one) and confounding to parents, who must have been outraged when their little ones took Bullwinkle’s advice to remove the channel-changing knob from the set!

    Hullo, Low IQ'ers!!

I love the Rocky and Bullwinkle show, especially Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and Boris and Natasha!! All the characters are funny in a sort of dumb way. The animation is awful, but that's part of the charm!! I definitely recommend this show for a good laugh.

"I never thought Heaven would be like this, Rocky ..."

For sheer wit, delightfully skewed comic genius, peerless voice acting, good cheer, and matchless power to make you glad you're alive, there's just nothing better than "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle"! Hokey smoke!
