Roma, Città Libera

Overview

This witty and bittersweet melodrama from director Marcello Pagliero gets its first American video release in an excellent edition from No Shame Films. Roma Citta Libera has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1; the source materials show few visible signs of their age (this was supposedly struck from the original vault negative), and the contrast and grey scale is pleasing throughout. The audio maintains the original monophonic sound mix and has been mastered in Dolby Digital...

The audio maintains the original monophonic sound mix and has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo; the audio is a bit less pristine than the images, but is still quite presentable for its vintage. The dialogue is in Italian, with optional English language subtitles. Bonus materials include the film's original Italian trailer, an interview with Luigi Filippo D'Amico, an assistant editor and contributing screenwriter on the film who shares his memories of working with Pagliero and star Vittorio De Sica, and a chat with critic and film historian Oreste De Fornari, who talks about the film's reputation and how it compares to other classics of the Italian cinema. And the bonus booklet includes an essay on the film from Richard Harlan Smith, as well as biographies of De Sica and composer Nino Rota. Roma Citta Libera has long been hard to see in the United States, and No Shame are to be thanked for making it available to American film fans; the fact they've done so with such loving care is all the more reason to pick this up.
