Overview

Romancing the Stone was director Robert Zemeckis' first box-office success, and the film that turned Michael Douglas into a bankable leading man. One would think that these two claims to fame would be enough for a special edition DVD, but in this case 20th Century Fox has once again issued a movie-only disc. The 2.35:1 widescreen transfer is a vast improvement over the aged video and cable version of the film. The "scope" aspect ratio opens the film up and returns the sense of an adventure film. The sound, while in Dolby Surround, is disappointing. For one reason or another, the audio level sounds lower than usual, and it is necessary to turn the stereo up before achieving a good, theater-quality sound. Zemeckis has not proven to be against recording commentary tracks, so the lack of a track on this disc is unfortunate. Romancing the Stone was one of the biggest hits of the 1980s and deserves more supplementary material than the odd trailer "starring" Danny DeVito talking about the film in character, in a scene shot solely for the trailer. The video transfer is impressive, but the rest of Romancing the Stone on DVD leaves something to be desired.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Of all the Raiders of the Lost Ark-inspired films of the 1980s, director Robert Zemeckis' enjoyable romance-comedy-adventure Romancing the Stone might be the best. Zemeckis proved his knack for mixing fast-paced thrills with comedy and character, a quality that would be key to the success of his later Back to the Future. Romancing was rewarded with a huge box-office haul, and it increased the profile of all those involved. On the heels of her breakthrough role as Body Heat's femme fatale, Kathleen Turner thwarted typecasting with a fine comic -- though still sexy -- performance. With his good looks and smarmy style, Michael Douglas became a sex symbol and an A-list leading man for the rest of the decade. And in his first significant supporting role, Danny DeVito successfully translated his sleazeball caricature from TV to the big screen. Zemeckis would go on to significant commercial and technical success with films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump.

This is my personal favorite movie ever, and I'm so glad to finally have it in DVD format. My B&N membership made it a good buy.
