Meticulously detailed and filmed entirely on location in Italy, the series focuses on Caesar Ciarán Hinds and his intimates, including: his mistress Servilia Lindsay Duncan and her traitorous son Brutus Tobias Menzies; his niece Atia the gleefully wicked Polly Walker, great-nephew Octavian the fantastic Max Pirkis, and great-niece Octavia Kerry Condon; the famed general Mark Antony James Purefoy; and the various principal players of the Senate, such as Cicero David Bamber, Cato Karl Johnson, and Scipio Paul Jesson. Fictional characters afford viewers a rank-and-file perspective on Caesar's takeover of Rome; they include Roman Legion officer Marcus Vorenus Kevin McKidd; his wife, Niobe Indira Varma, and their children; and Titus Pullo Ray Stevenson, a centurion under Vorenus's command. With such a large cast, it can be a challenge to keep track of everyone, so HBO helpfully provides both a printed character guide and a featurette on the actors. Commentaries and featurettes are spread throughout the five episode-inclusive discs, while the sixth bonus disc features a photo gallery and two featurettes. Our favorite feature, though, is the "All Roads Lead to Rome" interactive onscreen guide. When activated, it offers historical background on particular scenes, such as what the rude graffiti means outside Atia's door in one episode, the ironic meaning of Pullo's last name "shrimp" or "little one", or the fact that it took Caesar over three hours to die on the floor of the Senate. Made with HBO's typical creative freedom and the BBC's eye for detail, Rome is a series that's worthy of multiple viewings on DVD.

    One of the Best Dramatic series out there!

    I've been looking for a new series to watch regularly ever since The West WIng went off the air, and Rome certainly fits the bill. Combining outsatnding acting and writing with a careful eye to historical detail, Rome has as much dramatic pull as any show out there. Can't wait for season 2!

    If you like historical fiction you will love this. I stumbled upon this,and wow, am I glad! The settings and filming are beautiful. Much of this being shot on location, in Italy. The drama,turmoil,sex,family,enemies. Every last bit of it is great! You won't be dissapointed in this. Season 2 is just as great. I agree with all the blogs online wishing they would have made a season 3!

    Wow!

    This is one of the best mini-series I've ever seen! The historical accuracy & attention to detail is amazing. History as seen from the perspective of the "common" man is intriguing with Pullo & Vorenus. Twists & turns & even humor. Season One is truly is worthwhile watching.

    Great Show

    This series takes some time to watch, but it's filled with drama. Everyone in the show has a story and it fun to see what will happen next. The politics of the council and Cesar, the everyday living of soldiers, and the manuvering of jealous upper-class women all make this show full of interesting plots.

    Innovative and New

    I love this series! It includes the classical and hstoric themes that everyone knows about Rome, with dramatic and unforgetable twists that make the story that more realistic. Murders, affairs, secrets, hate all come together in a way that greatly changes ones opinion about the "beauty" and "perfection" that was Rome.

    A time period worth remembering.

    TERRIFIC...I have watched this DVD 3 times and I always see something different. I feel as if I am there and the cast are magnificant. I truely enjoyed this version of Rome, it taught me and showed me how the people lived, thought, and loved. Not for children! Unforgettable!
