Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Audiences are accustomed to seeing two luckless, clueless guys front a slight comedy (think Wayne and Garth or Bill and Ted), so it's refreshing to have them replaced by talented actresses who don't mind looking goofy for laughs. It's never quite possible to forget that Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino almost certainly would have been the popular kids at their school, but the pair do "gawky" surprisingly well, with real sympathy. Romy and Michele's High School Reunion rides their performances to a more affectionate status than the script alone could have achieved, and it gets big help from Alan Cumming and Janeane Garofalo on its way to becoming one of the more memorable buddy comedies of the 1990s. The bubblegum look of Mayne Berke's production design -- all pastels and pinks -- makes it a gloriously kitschy affair, one that might be comfortable alongside a John Waters movie. Its characterization of high school archetypes may be typically simplistic, but it gets the overwhelming sense of reunion dread right on. No one can blame Romy and Michele for trying to concoct a better story for themselves, and the realization that others are just trying to do the same should put any stunted twentysomethings in the viewing public at ease.

Must See! You Just Might Die Laughing!

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are brilliant in this hilarious film about two airheaded but charming party girls who invent new lives for themselves before their high school reunion. When their ten-year reunion looms, Romy (Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow) reminisce about their fun-filled high school years and realize that their lives aren't --and never have been-- as respectable as they had thought. So, in an effort to impress their former classmates, the pair don business-woman clothes and invent a story about their successes. The results are comic masterpiece. 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' is the funniest movie I have ever seen -- I was on the floor laughing most of the time! This is a movie that almost everybody would enjoy. However, strong language is present in almost every scene, so I wouldn't recommend it to young children. (The movie has a well-deserved 'R' rating.)

Extremely fun, nostalgic, feel good movie.

I did not see this in the theatre because the preview made it look like a competition between the ''popular'' girls -- why would I want to see that?! But a couple of years later my husband and I rented it because we had really gotten into the Friends reruns and REALLY liked Lisa Kudrow's character. We were pretty blown away by how funny this movie was! It wasn't about the popular people competing at all; but, rather about the underdogs of the school and a really great friendship between Kudrow's and Sorvino's character. -- Not to mention the movie came out right around the time I would be having my ten year reunion. (Didn't go.) The movie is hilarious from beginning to end and the music is a great trip down memory lane. They made a few boo-boo's with the music (Immaculate Collection Madonna and Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love did not exist when they would have been in highschool. Plus, Post-It Notes were already around before they graduated. I remember people having them in their binders!) But those small errors don't get in the way of the movie at all and just add to the fun.
