Created by the now-legendary James L. Brooks (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Simpsons, and Rhoda), the program was praised for dealing realistically with such subjects as prejudice and drugs. The 22 episodes of Season 1 aired from 1969-70 and feature Lloyd Haynes, Denise Nicholas, Karen Valentine, and Michael Constantine. Season 1 guest stars include Bernie Kopell, Teri Garr, and Rob Reiner.

    more from this reviewer

    Room 222, Season 1

I watched this series beginning in the early seventies, and the show quickly became a favorite of mine.
With the availability of classic tv shows on DVD, I waited impatiently for the release of Room 222, and was overjoyed when I read that Season 1 would soon be available!
I had never seen the first season, so I was shocked to say the least when I heard a laugh track on the first few episodes. After viewing the "40 Years On" supliment, I was greatly relieved that the producers had early on decided to remove this completely unnecessary, out-of-place element.
It was interesting to see the gradual development of the show, and how the characters changed and developed over time; for example, making Jason a more agreeable and likeable person, and the expansion of Bernie's presence, appearance, and participation in subsequent seasons.
Needless to say, I haven't experienced nearly enough of the nostalgia and transport back to a much different, more slow-paced period of time. Teachers had more time back then to take an active role in their students lives and development. The show certainly shows how society has lost something of itself in the 40 years since. Hurry up and release Season 2!
