Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Abrasive stand-up comic Roseanne Barr changed the face of television with her eponymous sitcom, which surprised critics and delighted viewers upon its debut in 1988 with its realistic portrayal of a working-class American family living in the heartland.
Barr stars as Roseanne Conner, a plastics-factory worker who, along with her hardworking contractor husband, Dan John Goodman, maintains a modest home in Lanford, Illinois. Their children -- Becky Lecy Goranson, Darlene Sara Gilbert, and DJ Michael Fishman -- are not cookie-cutter cute in the style of other ’80s sitcom kids. When they weren't grappling with everyday problems, Roseanne and family frequently yielded to temptations we all have, which made them uniquely sympathetic to TV audiences. The series' tone was established in the pilot, "Life and Stuff," when Roseanne is asked to deal with Darlene's barking in school. "We're in the Money" focused on the dilemma faced by families just getting by: Roseanne and Dan promise that they won't blow his $500 advance but can't help themselves from doing just that. Goodman gets the spotlight in "Dan's Birthday Dash," when he fends off a jerk who picks a fight with him during a celebration at the Lobo Lounge a familiar local hangout for the series. Rosanne’s unmarried sister, Jackie Harris Laurie Metcalf, is the focus of "Toto, We're Not in Kansas Anymore," which finds the Conners in a tizzy when Jackie fails to return from the market as a tornado rips through Lanford. The first season ends with a cliff-hanger of sorts when Roseanne, annoyed with management at the workplace, quits her job. Barr was, in some ways, a polarizing figure; many people thought her humor was unnecessarily coarse. She argued that the show accurately represented blue-collar families and the challenges they faced. The debate raged for as long as the show ran, and then some; but during most of that time Roseanne occupied a lofty position in the network ratings. The 23 episodes of the 1988-89 season, perhaps more so than any that followed, demonstrate how she managed it.

    Good start for fans!

As a fan of Roseanne this DVD is a very good one to start with when purchasing your set. I could not afford to pay $300 for the box-set so I have started with the first season and worked my way up to the fourth season now.I have to admitt that in this season Jackie is more comical than Roseanne. My favorite episode in this set is Let's call it quits, when Roseanne quits Wellman's and stands up to Faber. One of the best purchases I've made in DVDs!

    Censored/Edited Episodes...Beware!

Carsey-Werner and Roseanne herself have apparently decided that the fans of this series are not entitled to the full episodes as originally broadcast on ABC, but instead only the edited, syndicated episodes which are missing up to 3 minutes each. Multiplied over 23 episodes, that's over an hour of missing footage. Shameful treatment of a classic sitcom, and one that will remain on the store shelf as far as I'm concerned. If you want these shorter episodes, spend $30 on a VCR and tape them off the cable/satellite instead of rewarding the studio for producing an inferior product.

    We approve!!

We have just received our copy and it is well worth it! Even if it may be missing a few moments from the original air play, which we can't even tell where it would have been edited slightly, this is a must for Roseanne fans. We are truly happy to have this in our collection to watch anytime. Eventually the reruns will no longer be on TV and we will have our DVD! Looking forward to Season 2!!

    Roseanne Season 1

FINALLY! Season 1 is finally out. This show is still one of my favorite shows that I still watch when they're showing the re-runs on oxygen or the other channels. Interesting characters, storyline and how they deal with practially every situation near the end that they deal with.

    Television at its Best

I am extremely happy that this show is going to see the light of day on DVD. It was almost a perfect show. It dealt with everyday issues through the eyes of an ordinary family in middle America. But it did more than just present the issues it made us laugh as well. This is definitely one for my collection.
