Rugrats in Paris: The Movie

The third in the series, combining both the popular Nickelodeon hits Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys, Rugrats Go Wild wasn't the hit that Paramount had hoped for, but there is little doubt the young ones will be clamoring for this DVD. Overview

The third in the series, combining both the popular Nickelodeon hits Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys, Rugrats Go Wild wasn't the hit that Paramount had hoped for, but there is little doubt the young ones will be clamoring for this DVD. Sure to be seen as family friendly, this disc comes in both 2.35:1 anamorphic and pan-and-scan transfers. Kids may not notice, but the image is amazing, with bright, strong colors and perfect line detail. As would be expected, there are no distracting elements such as grain or print scratches. The picture is unquestionably the highlight of this title, since the 5.1 Dolby Digital track lacks any real creative appeal. The surrounds aren't utilized as would be expected from such a recent release, and the almost exclusive use of the front speakers doesn't add any depth to the audio field. While the sound is weak, the supplements are even more so: four deleted songs (which are debatably worse than the already poor ones used in the film), an unused scene, and an alternate ending, all in partial-work print form. Labeled a "featurette" -- though not even two minutes in length -- cast members Bruce Willis and Chrissie Hynde talk about singing and working together. Finally, along with a few other promotional pieces for Paramount products is an "interactive" game that even the youngest child could master. The payoff if the game is won? An extremely brief interview with Tom Kane, the voice of Darwin. Certainly not without merit, this is neither the best of the Rugrats series, nor the most interesting DVD to go along with it. Parents may want to sit this out, but kids will surely be entertained.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
C'est magnifique! This sequel to The Rugrats Movie falls into that nearly empty column of follow-ups that surpass the originals. It's wildly funny and touchingly poignant, with enough of the requisite poo, pee, barf, and booger gags to tickle the kids and sufficiently sly pop culture in-jokes to amuse their parents. At the heart of Paris is timid toddler Chuckie Finster's yearning for a new mommy. He and his widowed dad accompany the Pickles family to Euroraptorland, run by the ambitious, kid-hating Coco Le Bouche voiced by Susan Sarandon, who schemes to marry the milquetoasty Mr. Finster to advance her career. The Rugrats and a giant mechanical Raptar rise to the occasion -- springing to Mr. Finster's aid. The signature Rugrats bathroom humor a bidet is described by one baby as "a potty that squirts back" doesn't go for the gross-out but instead revels in each toddler's growing sense of physical self-awareness. Angelica, the babies' nemesis, demands to know, "What is it with you babies and poop?" "Anjelica," one rapturously replies, "where do we start?"

    Hard Hitting.

This is the most culturally insulting thing I've seen since Anna & the King & Samurai Jack. The stereotypes seem to be the main focus of the film, & they're highly innacurate. Instead of being a bad influence on children, the writers & animators should have actually studied & made this film educational as well as entertaining. On the animation itself, the computer graphics seriously need work.
