Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Current events in the Middle East lend credibility to this tense melodrama directed by William Friedkin The Exorcist, but it's the dynamic acting of Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson that makes Rules of Engagement irresistibly entertaining. Jackson is eminently believable as the ramrod-straight Marine officer who presides over the massacre of supposedly unarmed Arab civilians during the forced evacuation from a besieged American embassy in Yemen. Ben Kingsley plays a diplomat; Anne Archer is his wife. About to be court-martialed, he asks former colleague and retired Marine lawyer Jones to represent him. Friedkin stages the embassy massacre ambiguously enough to create doubt as to Jackson's innocence, setting up a violent confrontation between the old friends when Jones's initial investigation yields nothing by way of exculpatory evidence. The acting is first-rate all around, and Friedkin presents climactic courtroom scenes in a crisply efficient manner, leading to an immensely satisfying conclusion.

    Confusion in War

Written by Jim Webb, the Senate Candidate for Virginia and a Vietnam vet, Webb made this to be a morally confused state to show what real war is like for the common grunt in the field. Samuel L. Jackson swerves from his usual "angry black male role" which has been stereotyped on him by Hollywood into a recognizgenable soldier of Vietnam and a career Marine man. The Yemen situation is just like Iraq:no way in and no way out, and Tommy Lee Jones would be the perfect Democrat articulating that point. Go Webb for Virginia!

    Wow........

At the beginning of the movie you think that's it's just going to be another war movie. That's what I thought at first. But the plot thickens and the movie really draws you in. Then the courtroom action is really intense. Great performences by Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. There is a certain part in the movie where everything finally becomes clear and it makes you want to watch it from the beginning again. But I'm not going to be the one to spoil it. So I highly reccomend this movie.
