Desperate, Manni phones his girlfriend Lola Franka Potente who immediately runs downstairs and through Berlin streets to the bank run by her father Herbert Knaup. However, she's rejected and leaves minus money. When she goes to meet Manni, he's holding up a supermarket, and she's shot by the cops. In a destiny device familiar to readers of Ken Grimwood's acclaimed novel Replay, the story begins anew with different outcomes. In one version, Lola robs the bank and takes her father hostage; in another, there's casino cash to be won. All Lola-Manni scenes were in 35mm, while scenes without them were shot in video. Other cinematic techniques on display here include whip pans, jump cuts, slow and fast motion, split-screen, intercut color and black and white, segment titles, and animation. It's a tall order considering that she's broke and unemployed, but the rest of Run Lola Run proves that a lot can happen in 20 minutes, as Lola Franka Potente sprints desperately through Berlin. Lola's mad dash to accomplish the apparently impossible through sheer force of will is accompanied by a superb -- and relentless -- techno score. Along the way, director Tom Tykwer pulls out all cinematic stops, mixing 35mm and video, color and black and white, using pans and dolly shots, fast motion, slow motion, split screen, and even animation, while Tykwer's story explores alternate realities in which the future hinges on the slightest variations in chance encounters. Surprisingly taut and incredibly fun, Tykwer's ultra-fast-paced little odyssey is a terrific ride of a movie.

A film that sprinkles spine-tingling chills for its entire 81 minutes, Lola Rennt (known in the U.S. as Run Lola Run) is an intensely satisfying fusion of driving techno music and stunning visuals. Tom Tykwer's hip, German-language thriller is known primarily for its unique structure -- part video game, part choose-your-own-adventure -- which propels Franka Potente's feisty yet vulnerable Lola through three versions of a plan to secure an impossible sum of money in the next 20 minutes. But it's the details within that structure that sometimes escape critics' attention. In one original device, Tykwer follows the lives of the people Lola blows past, and how that split-second interaction helps determine the next months or even years of their lives. As they turn to stare or shout an insult, Tykwer zooms in on their faces, kicking off a flurry of snapshots that serve as chilling portents and bracing commentary on the interconnectedness of random events. Lola's initial idea for getting the money is the same each time, meaning that the viewer thrice watches very similar footage, but it's the small variations that make it newly engaging each time. The sequences are separated by the film's only quiet moments -- touching flashbacks of pillow talk in which Lola and Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) reveal their deepest insecurities. Shot through a gauzy red filter, these moments provide stark contrasts to the brashness of the rest of the film. The action is fueled throughout by pumping rave music, much of it composed by Tykwer himself. The resulting package is a spike of adrenaline that should thrill anyone who appreciates a smart concept executed at a frenetic pace.

    She is the master of a running cut!

    Rachel Cat is correct.

    This is a very good Arthaus film, one of the best. The plot however is nearly incidental in the opinion of the Dragonlord. What really matters is not the money but the fact that the two become lovers in spite of the money at hand. Or is that the 'Princess and the Warrior'? No matter; Like 'Great Expectations' and 'Oliver Twist', details fade but what remains is art and cinema of the highest order.

    And go buy this movie NOW! How do you say Brilliant, Exciting, and Innovative in German? This movie is fantastic and stands the test of time, holding it's own against all the new technology that is out there. And it has an AMAZING soundtrack!

    You can run, but you can't hide.

    Run, Lola, Run is a German language film about a neglected daughter who has to help her boyfriend out of a fix. She must use split second thinking in order to save him, but the question is which solution is likely to work in the amount of time available. The film takes surprising twists which may confuse the viewer at first, but hang in there, you'll get it soon enough. Vibrant, entertaining and surprising, this film made Franka Potente (Marie from the first Bourne films) a star. Sit back and enjoy the ride or should I say run.

    A crazy roller coster ride! I saw this in my German class and I loved it so much that I got it for my DVD collection.

    Brilliant

    An exhilarating fast-paced action movie from start to finish. This movie has excellent cinematography with a story that is as strong as the filming and the acting. Lola receives a phone call from her wanna-be crook boyfriend, Manni. He complains to her that because she was late from picking him up, he mistakenly lost 100,000 deutsche marks meant to be given to Ronni, a big-time crook. If Ronni does not receive his 100,000 deutche marks within 20 minutes, he will kill Manni. This phone call starts this movie on an action-packed, fast-paced movie where Lola tries to get his money and catch up with Manni before it is too late. Tom Tykwer does an excellent job at showing us what cause and effect really means. He shows Lola bumping into people on her way to Manni, and how life for that individual turns out with a show of photographs. There is even an animation part where Lola's mother is talking on the phone while her television is on, and on the TV is an animated Lola running down the stairs of their apartment to get outside, as she is actually doing it. Tom Tykwer keeps you visually stimulated, as well as audibly intrigued with the background tech music. The acting by Franka Potente is great. She actively portrays a girlfriend distressed that her boyfriend may be killed, yet determined to do what she can to prevent this. Franka Potente has recently been seen in an American blockbuster, The Bourne Identity with Matt Damon. Moritz Bleibtreu also does a great job being a not-too-smart crook. He does a great job portraying how desperate his character is when he calls Lola. This movie is pretty interesting, as the movie is the whole 20 minutes it takes for Lola to try to figure out how to come up with that kind of money, as well as the obstacles she encounters along the way. So, as you may wonder, as I did, how can a feature-length movie drag 20 minutes out to be so long? Well, the first time through...yes, you read that right, the ending is not what Lola wanted, so the movie starts over again, and this time when she encounters her obstacles, she handles them differently, until the next outcome happens. In the end, we see her try three times to get to Manni in time. This IS a must-see movie. It is one of the best movies out at this time, and you will want to see this, as you know Hollywood will be doing a re-make on this in the future!

    Run Loala Run is an awesome movie. It is fast-paced, captivating and like nothing that has ever been done before. It is the perfect movie for people who are looking a mix of action and drama.

    Totally Brilliant

    Run Lola Run is an amazing movie. It absolutely blew my mind! It made me realize how little it takes to change reality for an individual. Everything about it is tight and extraordinarily well-done.

    Run Lola Run

    Run Lola Run was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I kept waiting to see which if the scenarios would be the one to work out. I would definitely tell anyone to watch this movie!!

    A FUNKY, SPUNKY PUNK GIRL WITH RED-FLAMED HAIR...

    This is one coolest movie I've ever watched...and it ROCKS!!! Especially her hair, which caught my attention for the first time. After seeing that movie, it made me want to run with her as well! I'd recommned this to anybody who likes a thrill run... WHOO-HOO!

    This is a nifty movie!

    I saw this movie in my german class at school. Lola has 20 minutes to come up with the 100,000 marks. There are 3 different scenarios that are shown one after the other and they all start the same way, but they all end differently. The last one is the happy ending. There is a reason for the title ''Run Lola Run'', Lola does A LOT of running through Berlin.

    Great Fun

    High energy, very inventive, unconventional, great music and great fun. Best described as a long music video. This is one of those movies that you will watch over and over again. There are two short scenes where Lola and Manni are having lovers conversations that are absolute classics.

    Run Lola Run probably isn't a movie you would watch over and over, but everyone who appreciates films should see it once. Awesome soundtrack, great color, and animation!!! Well, worth your time!!
