Overview

A handful of fighting men must defy the odds to save their own lives and thousands of others in this drama set during World War II. In late 1944, a band of nearly a hundred American soldiers are making their way through a wooded region of Belgium when they are ambushed by German forces in a battle that became known as "the Malmady Massacre." A small group of American soldiers are able to take cover -- hard-boiled Sgt. Gunderson Peter Holden, a grunt from Louisiana called Kendrick Lawrence Bagby, a cynical medical officer from Brooklyn by the name of Gould Alex Niver, and Cpl. Greer Corbin Allred, known to his pals as "Deacon." Deacon is a devout Mormon who doesn't drink or smoke, carries his Bible with him at all times, and spent time in Germany as a missionary before the war, giving him an empathy with the enemy that sometimes puts him at odds with the other men. Deacon is also a master sharpshooter who has been having a crisis of conscience after nearly killing an innocent Belgian family while on patrol. Surrounded by Germans and with seemingly no means of escape, Gunderson and the men encounter Oberon Winley Kirby Heybourne, a British intelligence officer trapped by the massacre. Winley has top secret information that could change the course of the war if it gets to Allied commanders in time, so Gunderson, Deacon, Kendrick, and Gould must find a way to get themselves and Winley away from Malmady before its too late. Inspired by a true story, Saints and Soldiers was the first feature film from Ryan Little, a Utah-based filmmaker who previously made a number of short subjects relating to issues of faith in the Church of Latter Day Saints.

    I Also Recommend:

    Powerful Movie!

I borrowed this movie from my brother in law to give it a watch, and I'd have to say that this is probably one of the best independent films I have ever seen. I have always been fascinated with WW2, and this movie does a great job at portraying yet another event that took place during that time. I was not very familiar with the particular massacre that this movie is based around, but I understand that it is a pretty accurate depiction of that event. The uniforms were well done, and the cast all did a superb job. If you are into war movies & want another good one to watch and have never seen this one before, I highly recommend it. It's well done.

BEST WAR MOVIE TO COME ALONG IN YEARS!!

As an old war movie buff I rented this movie on the recommendation of a local Hollywood Video store manager and can say without reservation that this film is an honest, extremely well acted and directed effort that comes close to being a documentary. The story about events that took place during and in the aftermath of the Malmedy massacre during the battle of the Bulge is starkly presented with great attention to detail with uniforms, equipment, and combat scenarios, and the reenactors who play the German soldiers really lend a high degree of authenticity to the action. I can think of no other film of this genre that I would recommend as highly as "Saints and Soldiers:!

Great show for people of all faiths

As I am not Mormon I hesitated seeing this show at the movies. I watched it last night and cried at the end. This is a wonderful and candid film about WWII. It is suitable for people of all faiths that are interested in the trials that the soldiers endured, especially at the Malmedy Massacre.

One of my all time favorite movies

I sat the morning of Memorial Day to watch this movie. I can say it really set the tone for my Memorial Day, to remember those brave soldiers to gave their all for my freedom in this country. I was so impressed with all elements of this movie, bravo to all involved in making such a spectacular film!
