Overview

Originally broadcast on Britain's ITV between September 1978 and July 1980, the series The Sandbaggers follows the doings of various operatives on the front lines of the Cold War. Roy Marsden stars as British Secret Intelligence Service D.O. Neil Burnside, who oversees the titular group of British intelligence officers - men involved in a series of extremely sensitive and dangerous, politically-oriented spy missions. Although the series (recalling Sidney Lumet's The Deadly Affair and Martin Ritt's The Spy Who Came in From the Cold) deliberately does away with the flashy gimmickry and seductiveness of the James Bond series, it also boasts innumerable plot twists, a colorful supporting cast, and countless surprises that find characters seemingly critical to the narrative being bumped off randomly, as they would in real life. Unsurprisingly, the program checked in as a massive hit and an instant cult favorite. This box set contains all 20 original 50-minute episodes of The Sandbaggers, as they first aired on English television.

    Excellent Series

Riveting series that's worth watching over and over. Captures the Cold War era brilliantly and gives real insights into the issues of the time. Excellent acting, scripting, and story telling.

Bonus material is fascinating. For example, you'll learn that shortly before the end of the series, the author mysteriously vanished. The actors in the series believe that the author was killed because what he wrote was too close to the truth.
