Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Like All in the Family before it, Sanford and Son reworked a British hit Steptoe and Son and enjoyed years of success Stateside, as viewers delighted in the continuing adventures of a father-and-son duo selling junk in the Watts section of Los Angeles. Funnyman Redd Foxx shines as the inimitable Fred Sanford -- whether he's calling his son, Lamont Demond Wilson, a "big dummy" or locking horns with his holy-rolling, acerbic-tongued sister-in-law, Esther LaWanda Page. Sanford has been called an African-American version of Archie Bunker, and in many ways they're kindred spirits, both bubbling over with racist and sexist pronouncements but somehow coming across as endearing lugs just the same. This set collects all 24 Season 5 episodes, including: "Earthquake II," wherein Fred decides to travel to Las Vegas to avoid an impending earthquake and runs into singers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, as well as Merv Griffin; "Divorce, Sanford Style," in which Aunt Esther moves in with Fred and Lamont after she decides to divorce Woody; "Della, Della, Della," an episode that finds Fred becoming involved with a political campaign and Della Reese popping in as a guest star; "The Director," which finds Lamont getting a part in a community play that will also feature boxer George Foreman as himself; and in the very special holiday episode "Ebenezer Sanford," Fred is visited by three ghosts that try to get him into the proper Christmas spirit.
