Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Greg Fagan
Like a Latino Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana rose from middling veneration to out-and-out Grammy superstardom on the strength of his multi-platinum Supernatural album. Those who are only familiar with the guitarist/bandleader from his hit CD, though, are in for a treat with the new video release Supernatural Live. For as longtime fans of his silky smooth yet searing sound know, "live" Santana is an even more wonderful thing than canned Santana. Like the album, Supernatural Live is an all-star affair, with performing support from Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Sarah McLachlan, the Product G&B, Cee-Lo (of Goodie Mob), plus Wayne Shorter, Chester Thompson, and Rob Thomas. The band delivers spirited versions of eight of the CD's 13 tracks (missing are "Corazon Espinado," "Wishing It Was," "Faro," "Calling," and "Primavera"). In place of the missing songs are wonderful versions of Santana favorites from the rock legend's stellar past, including a "Gypsy Queen"/"Oye Como Va" medley that is -- as always -- an exhilarating blast. The DVD adds such goodies as behind-the-scenes footage, short interviews, and a featurette, but the main draws remain Carlos Santana, his drum-tight band, and music that gets you moving.

I have been a fan of Santana since I was five. I'm eighteen now and I have to say, by far that this performance is the best I've ever seen. My dad and I watched it together and the whole time I had the chills. Santana's skills look completely effortless and each musician was so clean in his performance that both my dad's and my jaws dropped. The drummer was AMAZING, the percussionists-AMAZING- and Chester Thompson on keys, who I've always admired as the old pianist for Tower of Power, was great. The cd is one of my top 5 favorites so the music is of course good... but the energy the performers portray is palpable and I found myself enthralled. I only wish I could have been there for real...

The 9 Grammys's this recording won say it all. I knew it would be a great acquisition. But, it exceeded my expectations when on top of what I say in the TV show it had a bonus. Maria, Maria, Corazon Espinado, Smooth and Put your Lights On [I believe], all individually recorded. I have seen these recording in the Music Channel and I thought they were not obtainable. They are in this DVD. It also contains a couple of other pieces not shown in the TV show of 2000. Buy it, you will enjoy it. Santana and Friends is great.
