Overview

Director Cameron Crowe's love letter to the angst of teenage romance, Say Anything comes to DVD in a very presentable edition from Fox. This is a very sharp looking 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that features dark black levels, detailed colors, and eye-pleasing fleshtones. While a small amount of grain and edge enhancement are present in the picture, overall, this is a great-looking image. The audio is presented in a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in ...

The audio is presented in a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and French. Most of this 5.1 soundtrack is focused toward the front and center speakers with only the music coming through all of the channels. While this isn't the most aggressive mix ever created, it works very well in the confines of the film. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. Fox has put its fair share of work into the DVD supplements, starting with an exceptionally good commentary track by director Cameron Crowe and actors John Cusack and Ione Skye. Before this track begins, there's a 20-minute introduction by the director and actors, each recounting stories and memories on the production of the film. Nearly 50 minutes of deleted/extended/alternate footage is included that features a lot of cut material as well as some sequences that were trimmed down in the final edit of the film. Some of this material is redundant, while other scenes are absolute gems. Finally, there is a short featurette on the making of the film, two theatrical trailers, eight TV spots, and a quick photo gallery featuring stills from the film. All in all, this is a great package for fans of this touching and now classic love story.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
During the 1980s, John Hughes gave the teen-movie genre new relevance; and in 1989 first-time filmmaker Cameron Crowe Almost Famous gave it depth and resonance with Say Anything, one of the decade’s most charming films. John Cusack -- the most cerebral, iconoclastic, and overtly ironic of the Reagan-era Brat Packers -- was tailor-made for the role of Lloyd Dobler, a quirky, intelligent underachiever with designs on the smartest girl in class. Diane Ione Skye is bright, ambitious, and more than a trifle reserved; she also plans to attend college in England, which could put a damper on Lloyd’s long-range plans. Character actor John Mahoney Frasier registers solidly as Diane’s dad, a loving parent whose business irregularities could land him in jail. Writer-director Crowe, even at this early stage, demonstrates a real knack for character development. The banter he writes for Lloyd and Diane is playful and witty, and he burrows beneath the skin to find and expose their secret insecurities. The result is characters that seem more human and endearing than most teen-movie protagonists. Although rooted very much in the late '80s, Say Anything has a timeless quality. More than a decade later, it’s still fresh and appealing. The DVD offers plenty of complementary bonus footage: 10 deleted scenes, 13 extended scenes, and 5 alternate scenes, all of them introduced by Crowe, who is joined by Cusack and Skye in a feature-length commentary.
All Movie Guide - Lucia Bozzola
Returning to the milieu that served his first screenplay, Fast Times at Ridgemont High 1982, so well, Cameron Crowe's writer/director debut Say Anything is more than just another 1980s teen flick. Free of John Hughes-esque slickness and clichéd generational warfare, Crowe's trio of main characters, including gasp Diane's father, are complex people with problems and emotions that are not easily resolved. As in Fast Times, all of the teen characters are quirky and natural, especially Lloyd's female best friends D.C. and Corey played by an acerbically lovelorn Lili Taylor. John Cusack makes eccentric kickboxer Lloyd utterly charming in his earnest verbosity and unabashed adoration of Ione Skye's smart, ambitious Diane; no teen-film romantic gesture can match Lloyd's boom-box blasting of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." In addition to hilariously and sensitively illuminating the mixed feelings of outsider-dom and first love, Say Anything is also that rare film teen or otherwise that honestly celebrates female strength and male sensitivity without resorting to offensive pap, confirming Crowe's arrival as one of the potentially more astute filmmakers in Hollywood.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

...a film that is really about something, that cares deeply about the issues it contains - and yet it also works wonderfully as a funny, warmhearted romantic comedy.

    I Also Recommend:

I adored John Cusack in this movie! Awesome Movie!

At first I saw the trialer, I was like this looks like a good movie plus John Cusack is in it! So I found it on my brother's netflix, and I was so happy that I didn't have to rent it or anything, and when I watched it . . , oh my goodness. When I saw the movie was about to end, I was fliiping out. I didn't want it to end. I wanted to keep watcing it, and the ending, it was like "I cannot believe it just ended!". That very day, I went to the store and bought it. I loved it. The characters were great (Especially Lloyd dobbler aka John Cusack), it was romantic and funny, and I watched it again the very night I bought it, but this time i made my sister watch it too. Of course she loved it. My cousin on the other hand thought the movie looked stuoid by it's trailer, but once I finally got her able to watch it, oh did she regret what she said earlier. I wish I had a Lloyd Dobbler! (P.S. I totally recomend evrybody to just stop wasting your time reading this long review, and just but it!)

Say Anything is the love film of the 80¿s. With its memorable characters and unforgettable quotes, Say Anything is sure to capture the hearts of young and old. Lloyd Dobbler is the all around geeky, yet totally heart-stealing guy, who wants to snag a date with the ambitious valedictorian of his high school class, Diane Court. Through out the movie, you¿ll experience the feelings each person shares with each other. From their first kiss after a wild party, to their devastating break up after Diane¿s father encourages her to break it off before she heads to England for college. With the classic scene of him holding his radio outside Diane¿s window playing ¿In Your Eyes,¿ it¿s sure to make you fall in love with him yourself. One thing stands in the way of their unrequited love: Diane¿s father and his dreams of her going off to college. Diane¿s father has gotten himself into some serious problems with the government, though that makes you want to slap him. Diane, however, stupidly listens to him, breaking the whole thing off. Lloyd is stuck in heartbreak, and led us to one of the many memorable lines from the movie, ¿A pen. I give her my heart, and she gives me a pen.¿ The question of them ever getting back together lingers in the air. This movie is sure to capture your heart and make you want to find your own Lloyd Dobbler. As the cover says ¿To know Lloyd Dobbler is to love him.¿

    A modern day classic

'Say Anything' is the quintessential 80's film----it should not be missed by anyone. John Cusack as Lloyd Dobbler will steal your heart, and make you wish that there was a Lloyd in your life. Cameron Crowe is one of the best writers and directors in the industry. This movie contains some of the best lines ever written for feature films. My personal favorite is when Lili Taylor's character, Cory, tells Lloyd 'Don't be a guy. The world is full of guys. Be a man'. How perfect a line! There are so many more quotable lines in this movie, but if you want to hear them---watch it for yourself. You will be glad that you did. This movie is still tops my list of favorites of all time!

For when you need a lil bit of hope...

I had never actually heard of 'Say Anything', and honestly I have never been into the 80s teen movies. However, my mum bought this, and I thought I would throw it on. The entire movie kept me intrigued, and I fell in love with it. As the cover of the DVD says ¿To know Lloyd Dobbler is to love him.¿ It¿s true. This movie provides me with a little bit of hope, especially the end scene. I would recommend it to anyone who just needed a little reassurance that `everything will be okay¿.

One of the best 80's movies

This movie is an 80's classic. I'm such an 80's child. It's a must see for those 80's baby boomers.

    Amazing!

Who doesn't love John Cusack after watching this film? Amazing story, characters, and music! Peter Gabriel's ''In Your Eyes'' is the perfect song to come pumping out of Lloyd Dobler's boom box standing under Diane Court's window. You have to see this movie, regardless of your age, personal tastes in movies, etc. Amazing.

    An Amazing Movie

This movie shows that even young love should be taken seriously, and let's face it most people don't take that seriously at all. John Cusack is amazing and Peter Gabriel's ''In Your Eyes'' is the perfect touch to pull at our heartstrings.

    Great Love Story

One of the greatest love stories I have seen ever. Peter Gabriel's ''In Your Eyes'' is still one of the most moving songs about love. This has to be one of John Cusack's most memorable movies.
