While this film is no "Wild Strawberries," it is a moving look at the deterioriation of a marriage over a number of years. Its sometimes brutal treatment of jealousy, miscommunication, posturing and hubris makes this TV miniseries what it is. . . Powerful.
It's nearly impossible to avoid emotional involvement, when watching this film, although the loyalty lines are not so clear cut as gender. Everyone has a stake in this film. Everyone has a stake in its outcome. "Everyone has known someone" who has gone through this, in one form or another.
I wouldn't classify this as an Essential, but for those who would like to see a more human Bergman film, with engaging reality, rather than dream sequences, psychiatric symbolism and fantasy - this is for you.
