Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
In this raucously humorous romp, Napoleon Dynamite's gangly and gawky Jon Heder essays a similar role: an innocuous, ineffective young man who’s never taken seriously by the people he wants to impress most. As Roger, a New York-based male “meter maid,” he’s got the hots for the gorgeous and charming Amanda (Jacinda Barrett). Enrolling in a class designed to boost his self-confidence by “unleashing the inner lion,” Roger locks horns with his anything-but-sympathetic instructor, “Dr. P” (Billy Bob Thornton), who has designs on Amanda himself. The bulk of the film’s laughs derive from the back-and-forth pranks teacher and pupil play on each other to secure an advantage. The sleazy, unprincipled Dr. P is a great character for Thornton, who clearly ranks as Hollywood's go-to grouch for such misanthropic roles. But Heder proves entirely capable of sharing the screen with his more accomplished costar, and he skillfully invests Roger with the likability necessary to ensure audience identification. There’s no denying that most of the humor is mean-spirited and coarse: Whenever the pace flags, for instance, director Todd Phillips (Old School) calls for a male character to get hit between the legs. Accept it for the in-your-face comedy that it is, though, and School for Scoundrels rewards with broad laughs.

I thought it was pretty clever at first but once it got into mr.p wanting his girlfriend it got distorted although it had a pretty good theme

    Good one

I'm a Billy Bob fan so forgive me if I'm bias toward this movie. While it certainly isn't the best comedy this year, it does have some good moments.
