Wes Craven's Scream became a box-office blockbuster and breathed life into the nearly dead slasher genre. This DVD of the film is an improvement over all previous editions. The disc offers a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials include a pair of commentary tracks (one from the director and another from writer Kevin Williamson), interviews with the cast and crew, theatrical trailers, television promotional spots, cast and crew profiles, making-of footage, and a special effects gallery. No matter what one thinks of the film, this is a superb DVD from Disney/Buena Vista.

All Movie Guide - Lucia Bozzola
With contemporary horror master Wes Craven at the helm and a cheekily self-aware script by Kevin Williamson, Scream (1996) single-handedly resuscitated the teen slasher genre for the media-saturated 1990s. From the opening slaughter of blonde star Drew Barrymore through the last-minute heroics of final girls Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, Scream simultaneously sent up and reenacted 1970s and 1980s slasher film conventions (with a nod to founding father Alfred Hitchcock). With a telephone-and knife-wielding psycho taunting beset babes, clueless authority figures, and references to such slasher chestnuts as Friday the 13th (1980) and Halloween (1978), Scream played off the teen audience's pop knowledge while taking a jab at the debate over the effects of media violence. The teen audience responded by turning the unheralded horror flick into a $100 million smash. Along with spawning the inevitable sequels, Scream's success reestablished the strength of the adolescent demographic and resulted in a host of teen horror movies, including the Williamson-penned I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and The Faculty (1999), as well as establishing Williamson as the teen scribe for the late 1990s.

First time I saw this on TV and it was scary, especially the opening. Through the movie has suspense, good dialogue mostly about horror movie cliches and horror movies in general. And it makes you guess who the killer might be, until the very end.

If I could, I would rate this about 1,043 stars.I happen to be very particular about horror movies. This one was THE BEST of them all. I liked it because it was funny, it was gory, and the characters put on a suspenseful mood. I can't think of a better flick to see with your girlfriend! Just kidding. This is the movie to see on holloween night with all of the lights off and nobody around. It had me jumping all the way through it.

I thought that this was one of the best horror films ever made. The casting was wonderful. The second and third movies will never be as good as the first. The best kind of scary movie is the ones with a lot of gore. This is definetely the BEST!

When i looked through the top ten of everything 2004 book i was shocked to see that scream was listed as a horror spoof instead of a horror!! I really enjoyed the film, the 2nd and 3rd were good but not as good as the original.

This movie was by far my favorite movie ever. Most scary movies start off slow, but this one jumped right into it! It definetly kept me on the edge of my seat and best of all it is somewhat realistic unlike other movies. I would definetly reccomend this!!

Really people i have no clue why this movie even was popular. It is such a waste of film. Everyone knows the "formula" for a good horror movie, but what the point of watching a movie that is so predictable the characters even know when how and who will die. the dialoge is crap trying to break down horror movies by saying if you say be right back you die, or the girl alwasy runs up the stairs instead of the front door, and then what they end up doing that and being killed. sure the gore was ok, but please it was crap and killed the horror movie for good, for a man who directed last house on the left this is just such garbage

When the Scream trilogy was orginally released, I was in middle school, and they were the best scary movies for a slumber party full of 13 year old girls. They were just scary and gross enough to get everyone screaming, but not bad enough to make anyone cry or have nightmares. I will agree with the previous reviewer that this is not Wes Craven's best movie, but I don't believe it was meant for the same audience as Last House on The Left. I have never been able to sit through that. Not that its a bad movie, its just waaay to much for me. Totally on a different level of Horror than Scream. They really should not even be compared. Anyway, if you are looking for a good scary movie for a pre-teen slumber party, I recommend this one. Its funny in parts, really scary in parts, and really really gross in parts. Just remember, the last time I saw this, I was 13, and that's who I'd recommend this movie to.
