Walter isn't especially happy about being left in the middle of Texas with two old men, while Hub and Garth aren't too pleased to be stuck minding a boy, especially one who isn't accustomed to hunting, fishing, or firearms. When Walter starts hearing local gossip about his uncles' wild and wooly pasts, he begins asking a few questions, and while Hub and Garth don't enjoy having the boy poking into their pasts, as they start telling tales of their youthful adventures, they find themselves itching for some new adventures in their lives. Soon Walter is a semi-willing accomplice as his elderly guardians rediscover the wild, impulsive spirit of youth. Secondhand Lions was produced in part by the well-respected visual effects house Digital Domain, who also helped create the imagery for the film's flashback sequences.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
"I've fought in two world wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I've led thousands of men into battle…. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile and tribes no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, and loved only one woman." What a treat it is to hear Robert Duvall roar in this heartwarming coming-of-age saga (reportedly based on Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson's childhood). Shy and sheltered Walter (Haley Joel Osment) has one of those fabled, only-in-the-movies summers spent in the nurturing company of his two uncles. Duvall and Michael Caine star as Hub and Garth, cantankerous old coots who live out in the sticks with no phone or television and delight in taking potshots at a parade of traveling salesmen. They reluctantly agree to take the boy in after his irresponsible mother deposits him on their doorstep. Walter is regaled by incredible tales of the brothers' rollicking exploits, in particular Hub's adventures in the Foreign Legion and his love of a desert princess. As in Big Fish, Walter will learn how much of these tales is tall and how much is true. Less interesting is the hubbub concerning the ill-gotten millions the brothers supposedly have stashed around their farm. At the heart of Secondhand Lions is the wisdom the indefatigable Hub imparts to Walter in his signature "What Every Boy Needs to Know About Being a Man" speech. Fair warning that tears will be jerked by film's end, but with its simple-life nostalgia, colorful characters, and crowd-pleasing scenes (as when Hub dispatches a quartet of taunting, leather-jacketed hooligans), Secondhand Lions soars as one of the year's very best family films.

    Gotta Have

This is a fantastic movie. It is funny and sometimes silly but behind it all is a great deal of emotion and life lessons. Awesome for kids, but you need to see it first to be sure they are ready for some of the scenarios. How the Mother's actions are shown may be confusing to younger children.
But this is definitely a Must see and must have!!

    Everyone Should See This!

Hilarious, heartwarming, suspenseful, exciting, and a million other things all rapped up into one unforgettably great movie. Set in 1950s Texas, Walter's mother dumps him with his two great uncles. They seem insane and unfeeling at first, but they soon become father figures and look on him as their son. They have had unbelievable adventures in Africa for 40 years and now that they're retired on a dilapidated ranch, they feel useless and have lost their purpose in life. Walter gives them a reason to love life again. One of my favorite movies, it belongs in everyone's collection.

    Great Family Movie!

A wonderful movie that brings imagination into reality, Secondhand Lions is a great movie to watch with the family and friends. If you loved Big Fish you'll love this! Golden Globe Winner Kyra Sedgwick does an excellent job at playing Walter's mother. She does not know how to take care of her son properly and introduces the wrong people into his life. She dumps Walter, played by young Haley Joel Osment, on Michael Caine (Garth) and Academy-Award Winning Robert Duvall (Hub), two brooding uncles who, at first, wanted nothing to do with the kid.

Before Walter entered their lives, Garth and Hub spent their days sitting on the front porch with shotguns in their laps waiting for the next salesman to try and steal a legendary "treasure" the men possess. Throughout the movie, the bond between the uncles and their nephew grows stronger and secrets about the uncles' lives emerge. The movie flashes back through time to show adventure, love, war, courage, and the importance of family. It is like a storybook because of all of the adventures. The flashback scenes are intentionally cartoonish because it is supposed to be portrayed through Water's imagination of Garth's stories.

The director of the movie, Tim McCanlies, is also the writer of the famous show Smallville. He created a movie that brings out the imagination in people. I have always been appreciative and critical of music scores to movies, but this movie's soundtrack impressed me. The soundtrack of the movie fits right along with the script. Patrick Doyle is an excellent music director. James Shearman created a great score to go along with the war and adventure scenes. These two paired together to make a great performance that displayed the actors perfectly. The song "Let Me In" by The Sensations was written and popularized in 1948, just around the time that the movie takes place. I personally love the blues song "Help Me" by Sonny Boy Williamson. The song's lyrics, "You got to help me I can't do it all by myself" displays the characters beautifully. Each character needs help with their relationships one way or another. They each help each other discover the lessons that they learn.

I must say that this is one of my favorite movies to watch with my grade-school age cousins. Overall, this movie does a great job reminding us that keeping your imagination throughout life is important and old age can never stop you from making an impact in the world. "Sometimes, things may or may not be true, but it's things that a man needs to believe in the most," says Hub to young Walter regarding the stories that Garth has been telling him. For a PG-rated movie, I would say that this movie delivers a spectacular heartwarming performance that any viewer who has an imagination would enjoy!

Every Texan young and old must see. Foreigners are welcome too.

A patriotic film for Texans (Texas is a whole other COUNTRY.) Especially good for kids or anyone who likes "tall tales". Sometime the truth provides the tallest tales.

    Terrific Movie

No plot summary can even give you a hint of how wonderful this movie was. The big name stars in this movie enhance the interesting plot. It is truely a magical story which teaches the viewers to never give up hope and to continue dreaming- no matter how outlandish your dreams are. This movie was enjoyable for the entire family and I advise anyone to watch it through to the end.

    What every boy dreams of

As a kid I would have loved to have uncles like these. As an adult, I wish I was one. Movies should be fun, and this one is surely that.

    Yeah! They REALLY Lived!

We absolutely love this movie. Our young boys watched it for the first time yesterday and the adventure spirit rose up on the inside of them. The last lines of the movie say so much "Yeah!, They REALLY Lived".

    The BEST family movie

I am generally not a fan of family movies. They are usually insipid, poorly written and the acting is terrible. I was thrilled to find this film! Robert Duvall and Michael Caine were terrific. The story is funny and enjoyable from start to finish and had a wonderful message. I would encourage anyone to watch this- old, young and everyone in between.

    A great family film!

I can watch this movie over and over again and it will still be just as good as the first time. It is a great movie which the entire family can enjoy, even the very young. It is adventurous, dramatic and at times funny, but most of all, there is a lesson to be learned. Excellent!

    A great, wholesome family movie

This is a wonderful movie that families can enjoy, with very positive themes. It demonstrates family and social values in a subtle way it also promotes the true spirit of America. The "subtle" part is the result of great acting and a not-in-your-face script. If you never heard of it, that may be why. Highly recommended for ages 10+.

    A Fun Family Film

Secondhand Lions’ plot was hard to follow at first but then it became easier to understand what was happening when Garth told Walter the story of him and his brother Hub when they were younger. Further into the movie it became more interesting and fun. There was more sense to why Walter was at his uncles’ house and Walter got to keep a lion that liked to playfully attack him. I went to see the movie with my best friend and my brother. We joked over the movie trailer when Haley Joel Osment said, “No television!” because his voice is cracking since he is going through puberty. We joked that this movie is a keeper because Haley is such a sweetheart. If you like surprises, lions, and supposedly stolen money from an African adventure, then Secondhand Lions is likely to capture your interest.
