Sex and Lucia

Overview

Sex and Lucia conveys numerous stunning images with colors that shine brightly on this 2.35:1 widescreen anamorphic transfer. The digital photography does lead to a significant amount of hazy shots, especially during the darker moments. The melodic score springs effectively from the entire sound field of the 5.1 channel Dolby Digital transfer. The complexity is not remarkable, but significant power does exist here. This disc also contains a 2.0 channel Dolby Digital transfer, which is more narrow but still works ...

This disc also contains a 2.0 channel Dolby Digital transfer, which is more narrow but still works adequately. This release includes an informative 25-minute behind-the-scenes documentary that discusses all the film's major elements. Director Julio Medem speaks about the story's origins and many of the key themes. Everyone appears very proud of their work, but it never becomes annoying promotional fluff. The documentary's interviews exist in more detail in a separate section, which runs for about 17 minutes. Additional production footage is available in the soundtrack area, which provides basic information and three of the prominent songs. A small photo gallery also includes 36 pictures that contain both filming and screen photos. The remaining extras include biographies for all the key participants, several trailers, and web links. The two Sex and Lucia previews come from the U.S. and Spain, and vary considerably in the content they present. Trailers for The Believer and The Last Minute are also available.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Sex truly deserves its top billing in Sex and Lucia, an erotically charged romance written and directed by Julio Medem. Paz Vega stars as Lucia, who travels to a Mediterranean island to recover from the loss of her writer boyfriend, Lorenzo Tristán Ulloa. The story is told through flashbacks to their affair and Lorenzo's work on a novel. A sense of dreamlike serendipity and unabashed eroticism infuses Sex and Lucia; the contemplation and realism of Y Tu Mamá También are nowhere to be found. But, like that recent Alfonso Cuar&oacuten film, Sex and Lucia celebrates sexuality with gusto, including romantic sex on a moonlit beach as well as sex games involving striptease, Polaroids, and blindfolds. Although these scenes stop short of anything hardcore, they are nonetheless deliriously X-rated -- and often exhilarating. A toned-down, R-rated version is also available. Adding to the sensual overload of the film is a sun-drenched island locale that comes vividly to life through unique, almost bleached-out cinematography. Ultimately, Sex and Lucia is a feature-length seduction wherein dreamy afternoon foreplay leads to romance under a full moon. It's a love story with a big, softcore heart.
All Movie Guide - Adam Bregman
A romantic and gorgeous film, Lucia Y El Sexo has a serpentine plot that viewers may not be able to keep up with. But it hardly matters as this film is a delight for the senses in every other way. There's plenty of sex served up hot and steamy, a beautiful island where Lucia strolls around naked, and luscious cinematography that focuses on both bodies and countryside. Lorenzo (Tristan Ulloa) is a less than successful novelist, but he has inspired one avid fan, Lucia (Paz Vega), and the scene where she meets him in a restaurant and immediately asks him to move in with her is a romantic knockout. Their relationship sours as Lorenzo discovers that he has a child from a one-night-fling a few years back. He tries to get close to the kid, which fuels his writing, and has an almost fling with his daughter's nanny. From there, the film features some improbable coincidences and a bit of sentimental mush, but this in no way takes away from this completely engaging work. Lucia Y El Sexo is a mature film about sex and relationships that is both thoughtful and very hot.

    Stunning!

I just stumbled across this movie in the foreign section of my local video store and rented it on a whim. My girlfriend and I were captivated by this film, and I ran out and bought it right away. I don't know why it didn't make a splash here, because it's an incredibly successful combination of eroticism and exploration of deep philosophical questions that should resonate with any young person. And it's beautifully photographed in the sun-drenched Mediterranian. This film is a must see.

    El Sexo

Sex and Lucia is a fabulous movie; if you can tolerate subtitles or speak Spanish, you'll love it. The insight provided by this film is multifaceted. It delves into relationships, writing, separation, true love, true lust, and tons of other ideas. I recommend this movie across the board. (be forewarned, though, it is VERY sexually charged)

Sun soaked senses fulfilled in Sex and Lucia

This film delves into the mysteries that underpin our relationships and the work of authors. Sex is just the fun part of the webs we weave, whilst actually making them more intricate. Elena's line ''It's just sex.'' after describing the size of Carlos' 'organ' couldn't be further from the truth, and as a viewer we come to understand this fact. In this the film succeeds, and as art describing the complexity of Lorenzo's art it also is a triumph. Great performances and direction from a gifted director make this a fulfilling film that does the script justice.

    Paz Vega!

I could just stop with the headline, "Paz Vega!" and let it go at that. However, the film, in addition to being exceedingly erotic, makes us think about how an artist weaves together intellect, emotion, eroticism, and more. Sometimes almost surrealistic in a way that provokes thought.
