Overview

A compelling documentary (brought to you by the makers of HBO's infectiously lurid Taxicab Confessions) with all the components of your typical Jerry Springer episode gone bad, sexual power plays, dysfunction, and unabashed hedonism abound in this DVD from Strand Releasing. Presented in 1.33:1, the image is virtually flawless and the colors well balanced. Even-colored flesh tones abound as our sexual sextuplet embarks on a series of orgiastic adventures, and the Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack realistically brings every moan and groan into viewers' living rooms with commendable, distortion-free clarity. After viewers experience Swinging 101 with the feature, some interesting extras offer an even more compelling look at "The Lifestyle." Over 30 minutes of addition scenes offer everything from swinger James displaying his "special technique" to a revelation of the damning social ramifications of such a sexually liberated lifestyle. If viewers are curious as to the state of the subjects' current relationships, they can take a peek at some updates that follow them both personally and professionally, and trailers for this and other titles from Strand round this release out nicely.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
A documentary about non-monogamous heterosexual relationships, Sex With Strangers can't escape at least a tinge of prurience. Impassive in tone, though, the film spends more time exploring the lifestyle's emotional repercussions than detailing its sexual practices. After several seasons helming HBO's Taxicab Confessions, producer/directors Harry and Joe Gantz know how to let their interview subjects drive the narrative. More often than not, though, it's the disconnect between theory and reality that best illuminates these nontraditional lives. Middle-aged married couple James and Theresa come off the most sympathetically. As they jointly navigate the world of swingers, their relationship with each other remains front and center. At the opposite extreme, ménage à trois mastermind Calvin can't help but seem immature and manipulative, a pasty gigolo all too willing to play his lovers off one another. Gerard and Shannon, the younger married couple, emerge somewhere in the middle. They're obviously loving and committed, but their swinging finally comes between them. Despite her joyless demeanor, sex-abuse survivor Shannon remains the most fascinating interviewee even before husband Gerard's shenanigans send her to a mental hospital. Ultimately, it's the producers' willingness to let such plot twists speak for themselves that distinguishes the film from other treatments of the same subject. Despite moderate production values and a few glaring gaps in continuity, Sex With Strangers proves a fascinating look at an unusual topic.
