Overview

Directed by Peter Chelsom, this film is the English-language remake of Masayuki Suo's 1995 romantic comedy of the same name; the Japanese version earned a record-breaking 9.5 million dollars in United States box offices. Shall We Dance? revolves around John Clark Richard Gere, a workaholic Chicago lawyer who, despite a respectable paycheck and loving family, is unable to shake the feeling that something in his life is missing. On a whim, John disrupts his normal evening commute to attend a dance class in hopes of meeting Paulina Jennifer Lopez, a beautiful dance teacher he would occasionally spot gazing out of the studio windows. Though Paulina quickly lays to rest any preconceived romantic notions John may have had about her, she nonetheless forms a bond with him that goes beyond those normally held by a teacher and student. Invigorated with his new hobby, John focuses his newfound enthusiasm into training for an upcoming dance competition; however, he chooses not to let his wife Susan Sarandon in on his plans. Unaware that dance may be, in fact, saving her marriage, John's wife becomes suspicious of all the time he spends away from home and hires a private investigator to find out whether or not her husband is having an affair. Ultimately, John is forced to examine how his old dreams fit in to his new life. ~ Tracie Cooper

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Hardworking lawyer John Clark Richard Gere has a loving family, a beautiful home, and a rewarding job -- but he finds himself bored nonetheless. Becoming entranced by daily glimpses of a dance instructor Jennifer Lopez he sees every night from his commuter train, John finally decides to take up ballroom dancing and, as a result, finds himself drawn into a second family, the existence of which his wife, Beverly Susan Sarandon, is entirely unaware. This enchanting remake of the 1995 Japanese film -- an art-house hit in America -- works because director Peter Chelsom is so adept at leading his viewers down the garden path. Initially, we are led to believe that Clark's sole reason for enrolling in the dance school is to wangle an introduction to the Lopez character, but we learn that he's not necessarily looking for an extramarital affair. When we first hear about an upcoming dance competition, we immediately think, Aha, that's the big emotional set piece. But the contest doesn't unfold as one might suspect, and its relationship to the film's narrative is far different than anticipated. The supporting characters are a predictably diverse and eccentric lot, but they interact in unexpected ways, which confounds viewer expectations and keeps the movie interesting. Chelsom deserves a lot of credit for avoiding the obvious, especially in the matter of Lopez's dance instructor. She's neither a diva nor a traditional love interest; if anything, she's a catalyst for the changes Gere's character undergoes as he searches for a little excitement in his pleasantly humdrum life. Shall We Dance wasn't a big box-office success, perhaps because it wasn't the cookie-cutter romantic comedy many people expected. But in our book, that's a plus.

i've never heard of the original until after seeing this. and it was one of those feel good movies. i liked it and have to say that finally we have a singer who can be a good actor actress, ex. mos def in hitchhiker's guide, italian job, and alanis m. in dogma. anway its about a guy who secretly takes dancing after seeing a woman from a window. the supporting actors were good. and lopez's a good dancer.

    Richard Gere's Best!

I absolutely LOVED this movie! I appreciated the fact that it wasn't what it appeared to be a movie about a man taking dance lessons only to attract the attention of the instructor that he admired only from a train. The acting was wonderful and it has some hillarious moments! I loved Richard Gere's portrayal of John. Sensitive and yet honest in his feelings about taking dance lessons while hiding the fact from his wife (Susan Sarandon). Jennifer Lopez isn't one of my favorite people, but she really shines in this movie. Dancing is her passion and it shows on screen. The two men who take dance lessons with Richard Gere are great as well. I didn't recognize them from any other films, but I have a feeling they will be more recognized in the future. Stanley Tucci did an incredible job, and this may be one of his best performances. This movie has laughs, romance, and most of all, it inspired me to be daring and persue whatever dreams I have. I haven't seen the original, but it would be interesting to see how the two compare.

    I Liked This Movie!

I liked this movie. I had only seen Richard Gere in two other movies before I saw Shall We Dance, they were Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride which I thought were both good but not great and I'm not really a fan of Jennifer Lopez. I have never listened to her music and this was the first time I had seen her act and I thought that this movie was very good and that Richahd Gere and Susan Sarandan were both great but Jennifer Lopez was pretty good too but I think I liked Stanley Tucci the best, he is superb!

    Shall I Gag?

This has got to be Richard Geres worse movie since Runaway Bride. C'mon, this was the most predictable, poorly written movie ever! Does everything Jlo touch turn to garbage or what? The story was dry and you could see the discomfort in the actors as they tried to say their lines and not vomit at the same time. Wasn't this movie in theatres for like three days? At the end of the day the acting is horrible, the dance moves are just bad, and the story is in my opinion one that was better off not told again. Most movies don't need a remake and this folks, was one of those movies.

    Suave and Silly!

I must admit I was skeptical when my wife brought this movie into my home. What possible good would come of a movie in which Richard Gere learns to dance to win the affection of a woman? I immediately dismissed it as a 'chick flick.' I tell you, I could not have been more wrong! This film is so well written that I questioned whether it was modelled after a work of Shakespeare or Moliere. The cinematography is just as appealing as Chicago or E.T. I fell in love with this movie. Gentlemen, beware, lest you be caught off guard as well!

    Richard Gere is always sexy!

A movie that you can take your mom or daughter to without embarassment and a lovely way to wile away the afternoon. Really great soundtrack. Richard Gere gets better with age. His supporting actors in dance class are great.

    Get Swept Away!

Richard Gere - (be still my heart!) is as handsome as ever...and those dance moves are PERFECT!! This film is a feel good movie. It's fun to watch and has some great lines. Three men learning how to ballroom dance - just because they want to!! Great story...and that escalator scene - oh my word!! Sweet sentimental movie. Love this movie!

    Feel good movie

I enjoyed watching 'Shall We Dance' because it is a feel good movie about John going through life as a dance. It wasn't just about learning something refreshing away from his monotonous career. Life is a like a dance: we move to our own rhythm. Everything in life has rhythm and we tend to lose sight of this, so this movie is a reminder of taking the time out to smell the flowers(Forgive the poetic license here).I highly recommended it.
