Overview

Love brings together two men who aren't sure where to fit a relationship into their lives in this romantic drama. Living in the oceanfront working-class community of San Pedro, Zach Trevor Wright is a young man in his early twenties who has been forced into the role of emotional anchor for his dysfunctional family; his mother his dead, his father is too ill to work, his sister Jeannie Tina Holmes is too busy partying to look after her five-year-old son Cody Jackson Wurth, and Zach is the only one with the wherewithal to hold down a job and keep the rent paid. He's sacrificed his dream of attending CalArts in order to help Jeannie raise Cody. Between cooking at a diner and looking after Cody, Zach has little in the way of spare time, but as often as he can he heads to the beach to indulge his passion for surfing. While hanging out with his surfing buddy Gabe Ross Thomas, Zach meets Gabe's brother, the struggling homosexual writer Shaun Brad Rowe, who has taken a break from Tinseltown while rebounding from a dysfunctional relationship. Shaun goes surfing with Zach one day, and the two discover they're powerfully attracted to one another, and a flirtation turns into a love affair. As Shaun has to explain to his girlfriend why he no longer wants to be with her, Zach tries to make Jeannie and his father understand why he's come out of the closet. Shelter was produced for the gay and lesbian-oriented cable television network Here, though it enjoyed a brief theatrical release before its broadcast premiere.

Beautiful, powerful, poignant love/life story - See it & read it now!

I couldn't even begin to praise the writer/director for this film enough. This movie is beautifully directed. The actors are phenomenal, and several scenes and the scenery can take your breath away. The montages should have editing awards and the sound track is so wonderful if you are any thing like me you will start looking for Shane Mack's CDs.

Love is a powerful emotion and in this movie, Jonah Markowitz (writer/director) takes you to all the corners of it. From the young man who has loved his family so unconditionally that his wants and needs are never thought about. To the friends he has loved, cherished and respected. And especially to the man he comes to love who teaches him what it's like to be on the receiving end and valued for the person he is first.

I'm a 47 year old woman who has been reading romance books for almost 30 of those years. It's rare for any movie to capture so many sides of love. I see praises for this movie as the best gay romance. That is almost an insult to this movie, to limit it as such. This is one of the best romance (happy ending) movies I have seen in a very, very long time. If you're looking for a romance that will bring many emotions to the surface look no more.
BUY WITH COMPLETE CONFIDENCE THAT YOU WILL WATCH THIS OVER AND OVER, I HAVE!!!

Oh and thanks Jonah for the book! To those who don't know this movie has been put in book form. Comes out in June (2010) and I've already pre-order several copies and can not wait to read it.

    Wow!

This is my favorite movie in the world! If you are a sucker for love stories this is for you. If you're a sucker for gay love stories this is for you. Also great for the art aspect and family values. It has some language, so I wouldn't reccommend it to young children, but teens and up it's amazing. Leaves you smiling for days!

One of the best gay movies

I loved this movie. I rarely write reviews so that should tell you something.

There are no gay stereotypes in this movie. It's simply about a man falling in-love with another man and struggling with the fact he might be gay. He (Zach) has sacrificed so much for everyone else and needs to learn to do something for himself. Zach is a standup guy and he finds the perfect mate in Shaun.

Will they get together? I highly recommend you watch this movie to find out.

Beautifully acted and the chemistry between Trevor Wright and Brad Rowe is sizzlin'.
