Universal's DVD offers some serious volume on the soundtrack -- when the cannons go off in the battle scene that follows the credits, your neighbors are likely to know about it, depending upon how one's speakers are set up. The music is mastered in equally impressive fashion -- Frank Skinner's arrangement of the folk tune referred to in the title, complete with trumpets and a horn embellishment, is presented in exquisite detail, as is the gentle orchestral idyll depicting Stewart's youngest son's fishing in the opening, and the rest of the film sounds just as good. The two-channel stereo and Dolby 5.1 digital surround options both yield enjoyable playback results through speakers. The image is also far superior to the old laserdisc edition -- the northern Virginia landscape as depicted in the opening is a lush, seductive setting, and all of the color tones and details throughout the film are captured perfectly. The 1.85-to-1 aspect ratio also focuses the action beautifully and the entire viewing experience is enhanced here. By contrast, the original trailer -- which is the only bonus feature present -- shows yellowed skin tones and rough, boomy sound. The film has gotten 20 chapters, and the disc opens automatically on a simple two-layer menu, with the "play" option in the default setting. Captions and subtitles are accessible in English, French, and Spanish.

Shenandoah's wholesome characters and emphasis on family values resemble the ingredients of a 1950s Walt Disney production. But the film's strong antiwar and human-rights themes separate it from typical Disney fare. The production builds its story on Virginia farmer and widower Charlie Anderson's opposition to the Civil War. As an opponent of slavery, Anderson (James Stewart) cannot support the Confederate forces. As a Virginian, he cannot support the Union forces. War is nonsense anyway, he believes, and he forbids his six sons to fight. But the war ensnares the family anyway after Union forces seize one of Anderson's sons in the mistaken belief that he is a Confederate soldier. Tragedy strikes, tearing the family asunder, but in the end, the Anderson clan endure. Filmed in 1965 when America was embroiling itself in racial strife and the unpopular Vietnam conflict, the motion picture was certainly timely. Stewart delivers a fine performance as the idealistic but autocratic father who refuses to compromise his beliefs, and the performances of the supporting cast -- though not on a par with Stewart's -- are good. The vibrant cinematography enhances the production with its depiction of the fury of war against the tranquility of corn fields and peaceful farm life. Although the blatant sentimentality of some scenes -- in particular the ending -- lowers the film's artistic value, Shenandoah is a good family film with a message that is easy to grasp.

    The best screenplay of all family vs war movies!

    Jimmy Stewart brings a bigger than life performance to an already brilliant script. The memorable scenes that still apply today are the protection of one's property, the love and selfless devotion to your family and, most memorable of all, the way a father grants permission to the man who wants to marry his daughter. Unforgettable!!

    One of Stewart's best performances!

    Jimmy Stewart showed in this film that even though the times were changing, and he was aging, he could still produce some legendary films and performances. I think Stewart should have been nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. He gives an endearing performance as the patriarch of a family caught in the middle of the cross-fire of the Yanks and Rebs. He tries to ignore the war but it hits close to home soon enough. He shows that he will do anything in his power for his children.
