fun series, with good partnership between Holmes and Watson

Some of the episodes are based on Conan Doyle's stories, and others are original stories that maintain the spirit of the canon. There are some broad ethnic stereotypes, and it's the worst in the "Texas Cowgirl" episode. Otherwise, the TV series does not feel that dated. Ronald Howard's Holmes is eccentric and sometimes absentminded about his poisons or chemical experiments. He's also playful, often teasing Watson or Lestrade, and he likes magic. Holmes is refreshingly human and fallible; at times he blunders badly on cases, such as in "The Singing Violin" and Watson has to rescue him. Indeed, Holmes expects Watson to save the day. Watson is quite the action hero in that sense, and he also has other talents, like knowing all the railway timetables. Watson is also occasionally able to correct Holmes, such as how to refer to his fishing tackle in the "Pennsylvania Gun." They play off each other very well, along with Lestrade.
