Overview

A contemporary take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle stories, Sherlock is a thrilling, funny, fast-paced adventure series set in present-day London. Co-created by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Coupling) and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Office, Love Actually) as his loyal friend, Dr. John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade. The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain -- they live at the same address, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them. And so across three thrilling, scary, action-packed, and highly entertaining television movies, Sherlock and John navigate a maze of cryptic clues and lethal killers to get at the truth.
In this fresh reinterpretation, Dr. Watson is a doctor, soldier, war hero, and lost soul. Fresh from fighting the war in Afghanistan, a chance encounter brings him into the world of Sherlock Holmes: the loner-detective-genius. Sherlock can tell a software designer by his tie or an airline pilot by his thumb. His unique analytical brain allows him to earn his living (and stave off boredom) by solving crimes -- the weirder and more baffling, the better. The two men couldn't be more different, but Sherlock's inspired leaps of intellect coupled with John's pragmatism soon forge an unbreakable alliance. Across three thrilling, scary, action-packed and highly entertaining television movies, Sherlock and John navigate a maze of cryptic clues and lethal killers to get at the truth. The world's favorite detective has come out of the fog. With sparkling scripts and unforgettable performances from the two leads, this is Sherlock for a new generation.

Sherlock Holmes in the modern era London. Of course it's been updated with modern technology such as internet, mobiles etc but at the core remains the elements that made the original stories what they are. Holmes, the 'high-functioning sociopath', Doctor Watson, the trusty sidekick war vet, fast-paced action, twisted mysteries with numerous references to the original stories and psychotic villains all add to the excitement. Absolutely loved it! Would recommend to all. Cannot wait for season 2 autumn 2011

This show is the goods for a modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. When I had first learned that this was coming I was a little worried. I thought with all the modern forensic techniques available that the techniques Holmes employed might've been a little outdated. I am so delighted to see I was wrong. This show will breathe new life into Holmes for ages to come. More so that the movie with Robert Downy Jr. And I love that movie. The only thing I can think of that would make this truly better is if someone would modernize the novels and short stories in print for reading. With this show as the setting of it. I am astounded and well pleased by this series and I hope it'll continue.

Based on Sir ACD's stories and novels, this is a new take on the old tales. Picture Sherlock and Dr. Watson in the year 2010 and this is what you get. The series is hilarious. There are slight differences in the characterization. Watson is a little timid in the series. Sherlock works WITH the police instead of outside of them. Sherlock and LeStrade get along for the most part (which is pretty funny to watch). These slight differences work really well with the story. I love seeing new interpretations of Sherlock Holmes and this series is no exception! The BBC does it once again. I absolutely love this series so far!

OH, MY GOD, there are many things I would like to say. 1) Absolute love-- cannot wait for next season. 2) Most of the other things would likely be too emphatic for the internet. All the same: Lovely.

I have been a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories all of my life. When I heard they were updating Holmes to the 21st century, I groaned in pain and thought for certain that I was going to hate it. I couldn't have been more wrong. They have managed to update Sherlock Holmes while keeping the integrity of the characters and Doyle's creation absolutely intact. Fans of the Holmes canon will recognize many familiar aspects of the original stories, set into entirely new scenarios in ways that are very clever, a lot of fun, and sometimes designed to play little tricks on the fans of the stories by "changing them up" in ways to surprise them when they THINK they know how something is supposed to turn out. Benedict Cumberbatch is an absolute TREASURE. He is my favorite Sherlock Holmes second only to the brilliant Jeremy Brett, and if I am not mistaken, I believe that I have been seeing little salutes from Cumberbatch to Brett in little things he does, and his physical approach to the character. (Things he does with his hands, the way he'll sit in a chair... things he does that will seem familiar to fans of Brett's Holmes.) This show might be set in the 21st century, but it is absolutely Arthur Conan Doyle's characters. I think he would be proud and delighted by this production. FANTASTIC JOB, BBC!

We are a family of hard core Sherlock Holmes fans. Our preferences are the BBC series with Jeremy Brett. We do enjoy "Without A Clue". The movie released a year ago was okay, but not our favorite. This gives you an idea about our tastes. This group of three stories was great fun! Nicely done. We are looking forward to the next season. Enjoy!

This updated version of Sherlock has humor, wit, and charm. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman provide unique insights into the characters of Sherlock and Watson. Excellent script writing and acting!

Sherlock Holmes was always a detective with the sharpest eyes in the room and on the cutting edge of technology. John Watson was his only friend and assistant in crime solving, an army doctor home from Afganistan. Take these men to the 21st century and they are very much the same, at least in spirit. Writers Moffat and Gatiss pull plenty of material from the original canon and leave sly references for Doyle fans to appreciate. Even if you are unfamiliar with the original stories, a witty, clever set of mysteries with stunning performances and beautiful cinematography awaits you. I can almost guarantee you will be gasping for season two once you've finished.

This is the best show EVER!!!! I bought this without having any idea of what it was. All you need is 10 minutes, 10 MINUTES, and you will be hooked. I don't know any person that wouldn't like this show. It has EVERYTHING! Humor, emotional moments, conspiricies, mystery, explosions, a chinese circus, a skull, an awesome villain, a trusting sidekick, and a disturbing looking hairless cat. Also, (as a bonus) a very handsome Sherlock Holmes. ;) You can't go wrong here. Buy it! You won't be disapointed. It's like buying 3 hour and a half movies for 26 dollars. Totally worth every penny. You won't regret it.

I heard about this on the radio driving home, and I decided to watch it when it aired on PBS on Masterpiece Mystery in October. I was prepared for a TV show that would be alright, but wouldn't really capture the essence of Sherlock Holmes, wouldn't be truly "Sherlockian" I was SO totally wrong! The episodes are just as thrilling as the stories, and are extremely fast-paced and action-filled. The only difference between the two is that these episodes take place during the 21st century instead of the Victorian era. Sherlock even uses texting. If you like action, mystery, and maybe good-looking guys, you need to check out Sherlock.

Fantastic! I love the way the creators have made Sherlock modern, but kept the spirit of the orginal tales very much alive.  Fans of the books will love all the little subtle references, and new Sherlockians will instantly fall in love with Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock's classy demeanor and sarcastic wit.  And of course, Martin Freeman as Watson is just perfect.  Get ready to enjoy yourselves as Sherlock Holmes is revived in these excellently updated renditions of Doyle's classic stories!

Conan Doyle's beloved Sherlock Holmes is alive and well in this exceptional modern take on the world's finest amateur detective. Fans of the classic stories will not be disappointed! Although set in modern London, the series preserves all of the wit and charm of the original. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are simply brilliant. I wholeheartedly recommend to Holmes newcomers and also to those who are frequent visitors at 221b
