This modern twist to the classic stories of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is an absolute winner. The casting of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is perfect. And the rest of the ensemble along with the writing of the series is magnificent. I highly recommend this series. But make sure to start off with series one and work your way through! - You won't regret it!!

    I Also Recommend:

Sherlock is a fantastic update/adaption of a literary classic. I

Sherlock is a fantastic update/adaption of a literary classic. I was very wary when I first heard about this version, as I've read and re-read the entire Holmes cannon for years, and while I've enjoyed some dramatic adaptions, I've also suffered through some abominations. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce's films and radio shows? A bit campy, but usually well done and entertaining, and probably the gold standard so far. Robert Downey Jr's movies.? Popcorn movie fluff with Hollywood-ized characters that bear little resemblance to the originals. Jeremy Brett's Granada series? Very true to the stories, if a bit dull. CBS's "Elementary"? No. Just... no.

Though of course the setting has been moved to the present day and the characters updated accordingly, BBC's "Sherlock" is probably my favorite Holmes adaption ever. None of the original stories are used as-was. Themes and characters and bits of plot are recycled, but everything has a new twist. A really enjoyed the many nods to the original stories; the lines of dialogue, the props, the feints of plot. Even more enjoyable was the way the writers pivot off of these references, throwing off dedicated Holmesian scholars by knowingly veering in an entirely unexpected direction than what we'd expected. Dedicated Baker Streeter or not, though, you''ll be entertained.

The first two series are primarily focused on crime solving, and the third on character development in interaction. Not every episode is a winner. The middle installments of the first two series are a bit weak, as is the last episode of series 3. But the good episodes are really, really good.  Overall, this series is among the best television I've ever seen.
