Overview

A simple case of assumed identity snowballs into a romantic mix-up of epic proportions in director Andy Fickman's contemporary teen take on William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Viola Hastings Amanda Bynes has good reason for wanting to conceal her identity upon arriving at Illyria Prep School, and with her twin brother, Sebastian James Kirk, skirting school in an attempt to break into the London music scene, Viola sees her sibling's well-timed absence as the perfect opportunity to assume his identity. When Viola is assigned a shared dorm room with campus cool guy Duke Channing Tatum, her facade slowly begins to crumble as she begins harboring a deep-rooted crush on her unsuspecting new roommate. The situation begins to take a turn for the worse, however, when Duke reveals his affection toward campus knockout Olivia Laura Ramsey, who in turn seems increasingly drawn toward the sensitive imposter known as Sebastian. The problem is, the real Sebastian has decided to cut his London trip short, and upon arriving on campus two days earlier than expected, Viola's elaborately executed ruse hits an unexpected hitch that sends the entire situation spiraling into chaos.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
To better appreciate this winning romantic comedy, viewers may want to brush up not only on their Shakespeare Twelfth Night but also on the 1985 comedy Just One of the Guys. Amanda Bynes What a Girl Wants scores as Viola, whose day goes from bad to worse when her high school cuts the girl's soccer program and she is denied a tryout for the boy's team. As her twin brother, Sebastian, an aspiring rocker, tells her before secretly heading off to London to enter a music festival, "If you want to chase your dreams, sometimes you gotta break the rules." So Viola undergoes an extreme makeover as a boy, assumes Sebastian's identity at his new boarding school, and tries out for the soccer team to take revenge on her alma mater and her sexist jerk of a boyfriend, who doesn't think she could or should compete. Inevitable romantic complications ensue when Viola/Sebastian falls for her roommate, Duke Channing Tatum, the team's star player, and Duke's unrequited crush, Olivia Laura Ramsey, falls for Viola's Sebastian. Bynes may have yet to be truly tested as an actress, but she is exceedingly likable and a totally charming and natural comedian. This is not your Amanda Show Amanda: The PG-13-rated She's the Man contains mild profanities, a restaurant scene in which Viola/Sebastian tries to pump up his playa-cred for his skeptical teammates, and a silly bit with a discovered box of tampons, not to mention close calls in the shower. Extra points for David Cross Arrested Development as Sebastian's clueless and overly solicitous headmaster, and Julie Hagerty Airplane as Viola's mother, who pushes her daughter to give up soccer and become a debutante.
All Movie Guide
Many of Shakespeare's plays have been made palatable for teenage moviegoers, but She's the Man pulls off the trick more deftly than most. Andy Fickman's modern staging of Twelfth Night, involving a high school girl who wants to play on the boys' soccer team, has plenty of moves thanks to the fleet footing of actress Amanda Bynes. Known from an early age for her sharp comic timing, Bynes puts her elastic face and smart instincts to work playing both Viola and her twin brother Sebastian, whose identity she assumes to try out for the team. (In a true homage, She's the Man uses the original character names from the play, even providing Viola's love interest with the unlikely given name of Duke Orsino.) Bynes plays a couple moments as Sebastian a bit broadly, but that's true to the tone of one of the Bard's most whimsical and slapstick comedies. The cast is speckled with fine comic actors (David Cross, Julie Hagerty) and capable straight men to balance things out (Channing Tatum as the aforementioned Duke), and the script is notable for always remaining sweet, in turn sidestepping the potential for homophobia that's built into the text. In the real world, Viola's barely concealed love for Duke, when she's in the guise of Sebastian, might cause a square-jawed jock like Duke to resort to some hurtful epithets. But not here. In fact, She's the Man would surely not work so well if it succumbed to any kind of modern-day cynicism. By retaining a pure affection for the screwball implausibility of Twelfth Night, it excels. In a sure sign that the play's usage was no mere marketing gimmick, producer-screenwriter Ewen Leslie would later reassert his love for Twelfth Night, naming a pair of canines Viola and Sebastian in Hotel for Dogs.

How many people do you know that would dress up like your siblin

How many people do you know that would dress up like your siblings to get into a college to play soccer on the guys team? Viola’s soccer team gets cut at Cornwall. She wants to join the guy’s team, but they don’t allow girls. So she disguises herself as her twin brother, Sebastian, and goes out for the rival school, Illyria, boys’ team and makes it. While her brother is in London for a few weeks working on his music, Viola’s falling in love with her roommate, Duke, unfortunately. But Duke likes Olivia and Olivia is falling for “Sebastian”. Unexpectedly, the real Sebastian came home early. He arrives on campus and has no clue that he was replaced by his twin sister.
Co-stars, Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum, had great “chemistry” in the making of the film. Although they have their funny times, they also have romantic times. Tatum portrays Duke very well. He’s hilarious, awkward at times and great at soccer, which his character has to be good at soccer or the director wouldn’t have picked a good actor for Duke. Bynes’ character, Viola, fits her perfectly because she has a little tom boy vibe in her. She’s hilarious as well. She could make a crowd laugh without even trying hard.
She’s the Man, one of my many favorite, is a great movie for a romantic comedy and if you enjoy the sport of soccer. Although it contains language that is not suitable for younger viewers, it has a good point to the storyline of the movie; if you lie, someone’s going to get hurt. The characters do it in an amusing way that you get hooked in and feel for the characters, what they’re going through. Sometimes you can figure out what they’re going to do judging on how they are.
This movie can be admirable to some people and is very admirable to me. I would rate this movie a five out of five stars; the casting for the parts is amazing, and the script suits the characters beautifully. So rent the movie, cuddle up to the TV and watch it.

    Just a cute no-brainer

I recommend this chick-flick if you are just wanting to sit back and relax. This is a non-intellectual, non-brain strain, funny movie. There are some minor sexual situations and language, but it's PG13 rating is appropriate. The acting is pretty decent and some scenes are very comical.

    Great movie, but...

this movie is really funny, but the only problem is Amanda and her brother aren't the same height and Amanda doesn't look anything like her brother when she's a boy so I really don't understand how her team mates don't notice that. But overall, this was a great movie and I highly recommend it.

    Funniest Movie Ever

I wasn't sure about this movie when I heard it was based off a play but realized that it was very loosely based on it anyway. I thought the movie was hilarious and probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. It helped to have Channing Tatem to look at but Amanda Bynes is such a great actress.

I Didn't Think It Would Be This Funny....

I recently saw this movie at a sleepover. I had heard that it was a funny movie, but that it was not an overall good movie. But I now realize that I've never laughed so much during a movie! The silliest stuff from gouda cheese, to tarantulas, and of course Eunis made me and my friends laugh like maniacs! The whole cast did a good job, but I thought that amanda bynes and channing tatum did the best. I am now considering buying this movie and it is now one of my all time favorite movies. You should DEFINETLY go rent it!

This movie was the greatest if i could i would give it more than five stars. When i first saw it i expected it to be a kiddish movie! But it was for all ages. Also the movie had channing tatum in it and thats what made the movie. I mean that Guy is smokin hot! A model, dance, and actor i mean thats the greatest triple threat a person on earth can pull. can't wait to see more of him. Also if you watch the deleated sceens the last one is kind of like a longer ending!!!!
