Overview

Enraged by decades of treachery and mistrust, two magical samurai clans go to war despite the love that was meant to keep the peace in director Ten Shimoyama's feudal action entry. The year is 1614, and Japan has been unified under supreme shogun Tokugawa. Though the love shared between Gennosuke of Kohga and Oboro of Iga should have been enough to end the cycle of suffering and strife in the two warring villages, the spirit of vengeance has gained too much momentum and the people have become possessed by their own insatiable rage. Now, as a conspiracy set into motion by Tokugawa causes the violence to swell yet again, Gennosuke pushes for peace as Oboro chooses to fight. In a time when every ninja in the land has been bestowed with amazing superhuman powers, the ultimate war is about to get under way.

One of my favorites, given that the book is my FAVORITE book.(Yeah I'm Biased) The visuals are astounding, crazy supernatural ninja action. The only disappointment was the need to cut the clans in half.(for time I would imagine)But it doesn't ruin the story or it's sense of loss. The Romeo + Julliette Story stays intact and the main characters' chemistry makes the whole affair very classy and believable.Just a good movie all around. If you enjoy any thing with ninjas, love stories, or just some crazy action, try this out... The movie is visually stunning. This is not your "Crouching Tiger" stunning where the movie is all looks and awful storytelling. This could easily be described as "live action" anime. The characters look exactly like anime drawings and the speicial effects were thrilling (particularly in the action sequences). The story had great potential, but alas, the film is short, and the story does not develop to it's full potential. The ending is anti-climactic, but there have been worse endings. I would watch this movie just for the action scenes and the mere enjoyment of seeing successful costume design and casting.
