Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Two-thirds of this three-film collection may show Twentieth Century Fox’s “miracle moppet” at a slightly advanced age and at the very beginning of her decline as a top box-office draw. But the remaining member of this triumvirate, Captain January (1936), is a charmer that displays Temple in peak form -- singing, dancing, and more than holding her own against accomplished adult stars. In this remake of a popular silent film, Temple portrays the adopted daughter of a grizzled old lighthouse keeper (Guy Kibbee) who fears that social workers will try to take her away from him. The film’s undisputed highlight is Shirley’s oft-excerpted production number, “At the Codfish Ball,” in which her dance partner is a lanky, limber Buddy Ebsen, several decades before he became TV’s Barnaby Jones. The other features, Just Around the Corner (1938) and Susannah of the Mounties (1939) reveal a maturing talent whose now-considerable acting ability enables her to play dramatic scenes with more subtlety and panache than previously exhibited. The first teams Temple with Claude Gillingwater (at that time Hollywood’s premier Grumpy Old Man), playing a pessimistic tycoon she persuades to create jobs for thousands of people, thereby effectively ending the Depression. Well, almost. The second reunites her with Randolph Scott, perfectly cast as a stoic Mountie who adopts Shirley when she becomes orphaned. Both films are entertaining, if not in the Temple film pantheon. Fox has priced this collection affordably, and for Captain January alone it’s a bargain. — Ed Hulse

love these moves

Fantastic films; I especially enjoyed Captain January. Just Around the Corner also has its charms, though Penney's naivety concerning 'Uncle Sam' seems just a bit too ridiculous for a child her age.
