The two marry to give Ching-Ching a proper home, but their clashing personalities lead inexorably to the divorce court. Once again, however, Ching-Ching saves the day, this time with the assistance of twinkly-eyed Judge Booth J. Edward Bromberg. Stowaway is the one in which Shirley dispenses oriental aphorisms a la Charlie Chan, speaks Chinese, and offers imitations of Eddie Cantor, Al Jolson and Fred Astaire.

    One good, Two so-so

    Of the three movies in this set, the best is "Wee Willie Winkie". It's based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. Shirley's at her best in this movie. She's always sunny and happy. Everybody likes her so much, they're willing to like (or at least tolerate) each other. "Stowaway" is rather contrived, with a hole in the backstory big enough to drive a whole convoy of Mack trucks through (Why wasn't the American embassy called as soon as the girl's guardians were killed?). Shirley is an orphan, American by birth but now steeped in Chinese culture, Language and proverbs. She manages to find herself adoptive parents (of course). She just has to get them married (and keep them married). "Young People" was child Shirley's last film for Fox. (If you look closely, she's not completely a child anymore.) An orphan again, she's adopted by a vaudeville couple and becomes the third member of the show. But the couple decide to get out and retire to a small-town farm. They're all rejected by the town elders (and I do mean crabby, grumpy, hidebound OLD PEOPLE!) until they become heroes by saving the town's children during a hurricane (yes, those do happen in the Northeast). A standard plot, not helped by the fact that the couple still acts like they're sill in vaudeville. Nonetheless, I still recommend this set (mostly for completists). Most of the other Shirley temple sets are better, though.
