Shirley Temple was far and away America's favorite child star of the 1930's, as well as one of the biggest motion picture attractions of the decade, and the plucky, curly-topped tyke still has the power to charm audiences today. The Shirley Temple Movie Collection, Vol. 1 is a home video collection featuring three of Shirley Temple's best loved pictures -- Heidi (1937), in which a Dutch orphan brings new meaning to the life of her grandfather (Jean Hersholt); Bright Eyes (1934), in which Temple plays a young girl who is forced to deal with a family tragedy; and Curly Top (1935), which was adapted from the Jean Webster novel Daddy Long Legs.
You wanna talk girl power? In 1934, Shirley Temple appeared in an astounding eight films and received a special pint-sized Oscar -- all at six years of age. Between 1935 and 1939, she was Hollywood's top female box office star. This three-disc set collects a trio of her most beloved films to charm a new generation. Heidi 1937, based on Johanna Spyri's classic story, offered Shirley one of her signature roles as the plucky orphan who no sooner melts the heart of her crusty, reclusive grandfather than she is ripped from their idyllic home in the Swiss Alps to be a companion to a spoiled handicapped girl. Bright Eyes 1934, in which Shirley sings "On the Good Ship Lollipop," is another heartrending drama in which little orphaned Shirley is caught in the middle of a custody battle between a curmudgeon, a paternal pilot, and a society woman. In Curly Top 1935, Shirley sings "Animal Crackers in My Soup" and "When I Grow Up" and plays Cupid between her sister and a mysterious benefactor. This thoughtfully composed set showcases Shirley at her sunny and irrepressible best. Parents, though, may want to have tissues handy for some of the setbacks Shirley endures on the way to each happy ending. And be sure to check out Volume 2 of the Shirley Temple collection, another three-disc set, comprising Baby, Take a Bow 1934, The Little Colonel 1935, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm 1938.
