Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
More than a half century after her glory days, Shirley Temple remains the quintessential child star -- dimpled, curly-topped, and as sweet as a little girl could be. This set collects three films made at the peak of her popularity, including her first starring role, Baby, Take a Bow 1934, in which the little scene-stealer portrays an adoring child who clears the name of her ex-con dad. In Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm 1938, aspiring radio star Shirley is benefited by a stellar supporting cast, including Randolph Scott, Jack Haley the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, Gloria Stuart Rose the elder in Titanic, and William Demarest. She holds her own with the legendary Lionel Barrymore in one of her very best films, The Little Colonel 1935, a post-Civil War family reconciliation drama marred only by unfortunate racial stereotypes that features her classic staircase dance with Bill Robinson. And be sure to check out Volume 1 of the Shirley Temple collection, another three-disc set, comprising Heidi 1937, Bright Eyes 1934, and Curly Top 1935.
