Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Richard Gilliam
The Shop Around the Corner is one of the screen's best romantic comedies, and an excellent example of the subtle humor and wry character interplay that marked the films of director Ernst Lubitsch. The plot -- likeable people (James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan) who are antagonists in real life but also anonymous pen pals are infatuated with each other -- is ripe with comic potential, but Lubitsch takes the material further, including several bittersweet subplots that give the film richness and texture. The supporting performances are first-rate, particularly Frank Morgan and Joseph Schildkraut, and the film has the classy look that was a hallmark of MGM films of this era. The central story has been reused in various films, including Nora Ephron's You've Got Mail.

    A classic!

Outstanding performances by Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan and great supporting cast. No wonder they made a musical version "In the Good Ole Summertime" and updated version "You've Got Mail". A family favorite at Christmastime.

    Jimmy Stewart is awesome!

James Sewart is one of my alltime favorite actors. As Angela(from the tv show "the office") would say, "He's so talented...." :)

    Christmas tradition

We somehow lost our copy of this movie during 2004 and went through Christmas without it,missing it terribly, searching the entire house; now I buy a new copy. It has become one of our favorite holiday movies (and very entertaining any other time of year!) How is it that some movies just become part of our lives, like very good friends who can never be forgotten and are missed when you don't see them for a while? - this is one of THOSE very special movies that makes Christmas a true celebration.

    Perfect....

A wonderful romantic picture, a great cast & Director that proved remakes seldom match this original. You've Got Mail, the modern version was good but Hanks performance did not measure up to Meg Ryan, being perfectly cast she stole the picture.

This is such a great movie!

I love this movie! There is such a charm about old black and white movies that today's movies have a hard time matching. If you liked You've Got Mail, you will love the movie it came from.
