The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while Spanish and French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages. Supplemental materials on the disc include a playful and highly entertaining commentary by David Schmader, who claims to have held hundreds of annotated screenings of the film. He offers a variety of cogent comments on the film, such as the fact that the main character, Nomi, has two basic moods -- staring and kicking. There is also commentary from professional strippers during the "dance" sequences in the film. An onscreen trivia track is accessible, as is a storyboard-to-screen comparison, and a brief tutorial on how to give a lap dance. In addition to all the goodies on the disc, this VIP box-set edition of the film contains a "stick the pasties on the stripper" game (pasties, blindfold, and topless picture of Elizabeth Berkley included), a pair of Showgirls shot glasses, and a deck of Showgirls playing cards. Also included are a set of lobby cards that, on the back of each one, presents rules on how to use the shot glasses, the cards, and the movie itself in order to play various drinking games. If you have ever wondered if it is possible to laugh at soulless trashiness while immersing yourself in it, this special limited edition of Showgirls should provide the necessary ingredients to find out.

One of the most controversial films of recent years, Showgirls earned the seldom-applied NC-17 rating for its copious amounts of nudity, sex, drugs, and violence. It also earned -- unjustly, according to some -- disparagement by critics who thought the script by Joe Eszterhas inordinately hokey. Elizabeth Berkley, previously one of the fresh-faced teen stars of TV's Saved by the Bell, lent her not-inconsiderable charms to the part of an amoral drifter who arrives in Las Vegas, takes a job as lap dancer, then becomes a showgirl; she eventually graduates to stardom -- only to find Vegas just as tawdry at the top as it is at the bottom. Part deliciously sappy soap opera, part softcore sex flick, Showgirls was defended by its director, Paul Verhoeven Starship Troopers, as being a serious drama. But in the years since its 1995 release, the film has become a camp classic of sorts, delighting viewers who've come to appreciate its fruity characters and jaw-dropping dialogue.

Every so often comes a film so vile that its own lack of a single redeemable element becomes its saving grace. The surreal decision to cast Saved By the Bell alumna Elizabeth Berkley as the protagonist, combined with the even more absurd premise of an exotic dancer's oddly intense dream to climb the ladder from a sleazy strip joint to a topless Las Vegas extravaganza, makes this joke among movies a rather funny one, indeed. Though director Paul Verhoeven's attempt at giving a no-holds-barred look inside the intricacies of the sex industry was an indisputable failure, certain aspects of the pornography business are unwittingly portrayed so humorously that the meaning behind them becomes slightly more palatable. A feminist view of the same subject matter could easily be disregarded as a biased or politically correct look at the age-old business, but the over-the-top, laughably bad nature of Showgirls unintentionally manages to desexualize softcore pornography, and, in doing so, puts the nuances of the industry, from the undertone of hatred toward women to the status differences between sex workers, into the light. The spectacularly trashy film strove to go above and beyond what everyone wanted to hate it for, thus making itself a laughably contrived production rather than a biting exposé. Showgirls also set a bar for what not to do when attempting to highlight adult issues, which helped forge the path for more recent endeavors of a similar nature, such as the documentary Live Nude Girls Unite!, sex workers' art shows, and the resurgence of interest in all things burlesque.

    Tacky, Darlin', Tacky!

    The movie so cheesy you just have to watch it... I am repulsed and fascinated all at once, and cannot look away. From the moment hitch-hiking Liz Berkely flashes her jack-knife to the leering truckdriver, I'm hooked. Never has such horrendous acting, pained scripting, and cliche'd plot brought so much pleasure. What a classic. Thank you, Paul Verhoeven!

    Love to Hate it

    Love to Hate it

    Every character is a selfish, shameless, opportunist.
    The story is intense and absurd at the same time :
    And, yes, this has Elizabeth Berkley fully nude. Plus Gina Gershon and Bobbie Phillips just short of full nude.
    This is a comedic and explicit example of how trashy Vegas can be. Fans love to hate it.

    WHAT A PIECE!

    This trash-fest is fierce. Elizabeth Berkeley is over the top. Gina Gershon is sexy and mean. Kyle McLachlan is basically a chin with a nice butt. The whole cast has done themselves proud, whether they were in on the joke or not. The plot is wonderful and awful at the same time. Theres so many great one-liners it makes my head spin. Nothing and I mean NOTHING can compare. I dare you not to love it.

    The glitz, the glamour, the doggy chow!

    Anyone who rates this movie badly with the opinion that the acting is bad and its too racey...please! You saw the cover and read the description before you got on this ride! Its a CAMPY CULT CLASSIC! Its supposed to be bad. In fact its the best bad movie ever made! Numbers don't lie and this is on the list of top 20 bestselling MGM DVD's. Enjoy it for what it is: taste-less trash that will make you laugh time and again! Pass the doggy chow and the lee press-on's and roll the film!!!

    A Camp Classic

    Yeah, yeah, it's one of the worst movies ever made; we've read the reviews. Still, Showgirls is that rare film that's so howlingly bad it's surprisingly entertaining. In attempting to make a serious drama about ambitious (and mostly nude!) Vegas artistes, Verhoeven and Eszterhas gave the world one of the best-ever unintentional comedies. Finally, someone figured this out and packaged a re-release that acknowledges Showgirls' over-the-top campiness.

    Replaces 'Valley of the Dolls' as best of the worst

    Only serious film buffs may get the high degree of pleasure that this howler delivers (and it is not the same pleasure that this film delivers to young teen boys looking for skin-shots.) It takes an appreciation of good taste, and a solid sense of irony, to 'get' one this bad, but it replaced 'Valley of the Dolls' as the best-bad in my book and that says alot. This one is epic. Seekers of camp and kitsch: this is the 8x10-glossy-motherlode.
